The CHR Revolution of Northern Cali

CHR radio is back in a big way in Northern California.

Let's start at the end with the newest addition - Santa Rosa's Hot 101.7. Like most CHRs in Cali it leans Rhythmic, but does also play Avril's "What The Hell" and Train's "Hey Soul Sister". It's going up against Y-100.9.

The biggest story though is over in Chico. Chico, Ca has gone from having zero CHR/Pop stations to 3 within a couple of months.
There's Power 102, which is pretty much a simulcast of Redding's Power 94.

Power 102 broadcasts on the 102.1 frequency, and right next door at 101.7 is a new adult friendly CHR/Pop called 101.7 Kiss FM.

The 2 above mentioned CHRs debuted pretty much on the same day. Just a few days ago Chico got its third CHR with 107.5 Now, modeled after Spokane's (successful and fairly new) 105.7 Now

In Sacramento 107.9 The End now has a direct competitor with Hot 103.5, which is playing Christina Peri's "Jar of Hearts" in all dayparts.

Undoubtedly a big part of the revival can be attributed to the domination of Pop records on the charts. Yet what's really sealed the deal for stations in Northern Cali is the success of CHR/Pop radio in San Francisco with 99.7 Now, as well as the consistent ratings success down in L.A. for 102.7 KIIS FM, as well as that of rival 97.1 Amp Radio.

There's still one major market in Northern Cali where CHR/Pop has been absent for a few years - Fresno. Y-101 had some decent ratings, but was switched to Hot A/C (it's now tied with Fresno's other hot A/C, KALZ, both garnering a mediocre 2.6 rating). Rhythmic Q-97 has largely been filling the hole, but this is one market to keep an eye on along with San Jose.

Hot 103.5 is no competitor to 107.9 The End. While they do copycat the End, 103.5 has low ratings ever since their switch from hip-hop to CHR.

I have to go back to 1985/1986 when San Francisco had two CHR's (KMEL,KITS) battling out for ratings. Both are neck and neck in the ratings in the last book (KYLD,KMVQ) and with the addition of Strawberry and St. John (both former KYLD jocks) CBS is out to conquer the S.F. CHR world ;D
