The Christmas Breeze

They weren’t the Breeze per se then. They were “Philly’s real Christmas” something-or-other. The Breeze moniker came after that stunt (and an awful one at that).
Yup. The Christmas music was stunting because they wanted to dump all their classic hip hop listeners. They wanted to provoke B101 to flip early, then launch the soft AC format to get their listeners who didn’t want to hear Christmas music. Real 106.1 and 106.1 The Breeze shared almost no songs in common except for a few 90s R&B hits.

Comparing the recently-played lists, The Breeze is playing the same songs other iHeart Christmas stations are playing, in basically the same order. I compared 106.1 with WLIT in Chicago, and they were the same. There may be several choices of Christmas playlists available to stations.

Considering the amount the iHeart stations the pulled the trigger almost at the same time, It wouldn't be a surprise that there is one log for all of them.

Some of the iHeart Christmas stations have different logs. The classic hits stations might not play newer music, and the hot ACs might play more newer music.

Not following. They had been throwbacks. Then the stunt, then the real format. They haven’t “done away” with the soft AC format. Adding a little more contemporary sound isn’t moving them out of soft AC yet.

It's 12:03 am on January 2 and The Breeze is still playing Christmas music. Maybe this is their new format!

Man, that is so unusual. I wonder why iHeart is leaving Christmas music on The Breeze, not just after Christmas but even on Jan. 2? I suppose the regular Breeze format returns on Monday. I am listening right now and for the legal I.D., the station voice said "The season's not over yet."

0ther stations that do the All-Christmas format give it up at midnight on Christmas day. Then during the week between Christmas and New Years they play a holiday song once per hour, but ones generically having to do with winter or the non-specific holidays. Frosty the Snowman, Sleigh Ride, Home for the Holidays, It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, etc. But not I'll Be Home for Christmas or Merry Christmas, Darling.

All I can think is that the December ratings showed WISX going down slightly while WBEB shot up to double digits. So maybe this is iHeart's way to get more people to associate the holidays with The Breeze? Keep going with the Christmas music right through New Year's Weekend, to prove 106.1 is MORE committed to Christmas music?

Especially with the holiday on a weekend, I can see how the risk/reward calculus here says just go ahead and give it a try. There’s no real huge upside or downside, and you may get some useful data.

Agreed. Some stations tend to go a few extra days when Christmas lands on a Friday or Saturday and the station waits until Monday morning to flip back so things are back to normal for the workweek. Also agreed that The Breeze doesn't have much to lose and potentially has some to gain. We know the audience for Christmas music is huge and we've seen year after year on social media where a lot of people feel burned when B101.1 cuts them off. Surely many (most? all?) of those folks have been listening to 106.1 all week. When all is said and done, those listeners will probably have a higher appreciation of The Breeze and they'll certainly remember ten months from now that The Breeze will likely keep playing the Christmas music until 2023.

And the staff gets a full week off. That's what I see. Try and send an email to someone in radio this week. They're all off until Jan 3.

I was looking at the ratings for morning shows for philadelphia. Jenn and Bill on WBEB is number #1. What do you think is the reason why WDAS does so well

Where did you find info about the morning show ratings? I haven't seen any articles like that for a while so I'm probably not looking in the right places.

The Christmas Breeze blows out of here as of Midnight last night. Back to regular programming with no real discernible changes to the music mix that I can hear so far.

They'd be nutty to make any significant changes. Considering what the format is, they're likely doing about the best they can. Adding in the consideration of what other formats are available and whether they do well in the Holiday book (out January 25), we can probably expect 45 weeks of The Breeze and 7 weeks of The Christmas Breeze for many years to come.
