The Christmas music misconception:

B

On a number of radio boards, posters continually miss a very obvious point on the subject of these Christmas music stations: The motivations for listening to Christmas music vs. regular music are NOT THE SAME THING! Christmas music, as I mentioned in a previous post, is more of a cheery little sentimental journey----NOT exactly the kind of thing that get's you going in the morning or after work or at a club while you're partying. You don't FEEL Christmas music the same way---which is precisely why I cannot understand how anyone can listen to it so much for so long before Christmas.

You and I are NOT their demographic...(being men and all) so whether we like it or not matters little. If your name was Brianna, then those stations might not be so happy.

Still can't figure it out. OK try this on for size...in your house, who is the one who brings up holiday decorating first...you or your wife/mother/girlfriend?

Now is it clearer?<P ID="signature">______________

I bring it up first...and I also happen to do a pretty good job of decorating inside and out.

I'm telling you, I really enjoy the Christmas season and all that goes
with it--which is exactly my point! In spite of this, I cannot stand the way the season is forced down our throats so early that by the time the actual holiday week rolls around, the songs don't even mean anything anymore!

You're missing the concept

The stations that run Christmas music 24/7 are the background stations that offices and small retailers use as "muzak" and music-on-hold. Nobody actively "listens" to them in the first place. The idea is that Christmas music will improve both sales and/or the mood of the customers. Wage slaves are just a captive audience who dutifully fill out their diaries, even if what they have to listen to is neither their choice nor their preference.

It's easy to figure out. Take a look at WJYE's weekend numbers. They're weak compared to their 9AM - 5PM numbers.

Women 35-64: Estrogen. Retailers: Money. Result: Christmas listening.
Fa-la-la-la-lahhh, la-la-la-lahhh. Guys don't get it, don't like it
and don't count. Don't like All Christmas, All The Time? Listen to WYRK, 97 Rock, WHTT, The Edge, Jack.

Problem solved.

'joy' of the Xmas Season / or "star" burning bright ?

well, when even...grinch and bah-hum-bug, gets the
christmas/holiday/etc/ "fever" which station
will they tune into ???

i have noticed, playing the same music,
each station, respectively handles it almost
completely different..such as

star102. will play that mr.heat song..
and 96.1 will never touch it.

96.1 plays "dear mr. jesus"
versus star 102, playing it considerably less..

soo, who is better for the holidays ?
(did i leave any station out, if so...
shows how great of a job they are doing).
