The CHUM butchering continues

In the latest in a string of cuts, CHUM announced yesterday that the noon-hour regional newscast on CFPL, CHWI and CKNX is being axed effective after today's newscast. This will be the end of a long-standing tradition for CFPL, as they have had a noon newscast constantly for at least 35 years. The noon-hour time slot will be replaced by CityCooks (a production of CKVU) and Star! News.

Here is an article from this morning's London Free Press: http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/LondonFreePress/News/2005/06/24/1102394-sun.html

And, here's the press release from CHUM: http://www.nimm.com/thenewpl/sitenewsprogramming.php

Looks like I'll be watching CKCO for noon news now, hoping they'll increase the London content. I won't even give Global a chance.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by mjlarochelle on 06/24/05 01:21 PM.</FONT></P>

It's not just the stations in London, Windsor and Wingham that are seeing a midday newscast eliminated.

According to program listings on their website, sister station CKVR-3 in Barrie is also eliminating their midday (12:30-1 P.M.) local newscast.

The last day for CKVR's midday newscast is this Thursday, June 30th(there probably wouldn't have been a local midday newscast on July 1st, Canada Day, anyway); the newscast will be replaced on Monday, July 4th by "Star TV".

Aparantly only for the summer.
At the end of the last VRlive@12:30 newscast they mentioned that it was the last one for the season as it goes into Hiatus for the summer...<P ID="signature">______________

YeziKnoradio saw CKVR-3's 12:30 news on June 30th and noted:

Hopefully, but given that three other "New Net" stations in London, Wingham and Windsor are dropping their midday newscast, I have to wonder...

But hopefully, they'll be back.

Isn't Barrie a major resort area?? Maybe there are very few people in front of TV sets there during the Summer, especially in daytime hours. Everyone's outside!

Oh, it'll be back for sure. Don't forget, CKVR broadcasts into the GTA and Toronto, and there's no way a private broadcaster will get rid of a newscast that benefits the GTA - after all, it is the centre of the universe! Except for Toronto One, of course.

This would be a first for CKVR though, as I have seen their noon-hour newscast up in Muskoka during summer in years past. No, I didn't actually watch it, I usually watched CFTO at noon up there, or MCTV. Summer hiatuses aren't unheard of though for local newscasts; CFCF First News (6 AM) went on summer hiatus this week.

The Auroa sales office has already been rebranded as A channel.
Perhaps by taking the summer off it allowed them to free up some spending cash on the rebranding as A channel Barrie. (just a guess)

I'm also not from any of the places the previous owners (Craig broadcasting) broadcasted A channel out of, so I never saw their Noon news, if they have/had one.
I wonder if the new A Channel Barrie will model after A channel news Edmonton, etc, or if there will actually be something fresh, new, and very different?...or just be the VR land News with an A channel sticker slaped over it.(nothing wrong with that, respectfully)
All I do know, is to watch for something new and exciting in the fall.<P ID="signature">______________

There is an open to an A-Channel noon newscast on TV Ark, IIRC.

Going on Hiatus.

Normally this is the beginning of the sounding of death knell of any programme.

The summer is a great time to take the show on the road - broadcast from the boat-dock in Huntsville, or go to Santa's Village, the old train station in Parry Sound. After eight weeks without the show, no one would miss it.

"We are going on hiatus, but will be back after these important commercial messages."

Keep an eye on the personnel instead. Who has gone on vacation? and why are they not back after eight weeks?

Re: Going on Hiatus. EXACT words.

Actually, the exact words were:

"And that's our show for today, and this will be our last VR news live@12:30 for this season. We're going on Hiatus for the summer, and we'll be back in the fall with new and exciting programming which you'll hear more about on VR News in the coming weeks. We want to thank all our loyal viewers for tuning in every day. Have a great Canada day, and a safe long week end. I'll be back at six."

I look forward to watching the new A channel Barrie News Live@12:30 in the fall.
I trust it will be equally as informative as (CK)VR's 12:30 newscast was.<P ID="signature">______________

And speaking of VR, it appears some advertising is using the new A-Channel logo-this is from the producers of the station's Asian-language programming:

(The logo is on the bottom with the sponsors list)

"we'll be back in the fall with new and exciting programming" doesn't necessarily mean they'll have a newscast there in the fall. It could be a somewhat different local program, maybe more like MITV's "Global Noon".

OK, but remember "A channel" in places like Edmonton, soon to be City.
