THE CLOCK IS TICKING ON CBS SF

What ever happened to some of those K-101 greats like: Jeff Serr, Stephon Ponic, "your ol' buddy" Jack Friday, Derk"after dark" then Derk "after dawn" Parsons, Charlie Serafin, Cliff Saunders and news folks like Jesseca Caperadda, Dianne Cartwell (Charlie was both dj and later news) how is that for a 70' flash back( I know I blew the spelling on some of the names) sorry.

I almost forgot remember Gabbert not only had the calls down KIOI,KIQI(K-101) but even the address and phone numbers; remember call us at 956-K101, our address, p.o.box 101 San Francisco, 94101, I think I didn't have a life in the 70' I guess that was my station of choice back in the day.

Not sure about the others, but Stefan Ponek (I think that's the correct spelling) worked a number of years early on at KYUU. I believe he also worked "underground" FM back in the day - KSAN and/or KMPX, prior to KYUU and K-101. I don't remember that he was on K-101, actually. He passed away a few years ago. Jack Friday was on many stations after K-101, including KLOK-FM and KBLX. He has written to this board a time or two in response to John Mack's posts. You didn't mention Ron Castro - a K-101 alum, who became a station owner in the Santa Rosa area. Gabbert used a number of his K-101 people as staff announcers at TV20 in the 80s and 90s. He also used Tony Kilbert ("TK") from "Camel" 106. I seem to remember hearing Charlie Serafin later - 80s and 90s - on a news station - possibly KCBS, but I could be wrong.

I used to listen to Jack Friday when he did afternoons at KLOK-FM back in the 1980's. I think he should come back to San Francisco to do maybe any airshift at KYLD(WiLD 94.9) or KISS-FM. Any thoughts.

60 something year old Jack Friday? Oh I'm sure the 18-24 latinas who love WILD will really relate to him.

Oldbossjock, yes Maybe Jack Friday is 60 or so, whats that have do with anything? I would much rather listen to JMF, Bobby Ocean, Jack Friday, Chris Edwards, and Art Leboe, than whats out there today, The 18-24 year olds missed out on the Greatest Radio of All Time, these guys may be 60 or so but they could still "Capture an Audience" End of Story, Kenny in Concord

Hi All...
Yes, just got back to the west coast after finishing up some family business on the east coast, to a very unexpected job in Bend, Oregon. Been here now for 2 months. While I was back in Philadelphia, I did weekends at WXTU (Beasly/Country), which was lots of fun. Regarding Bend, I gotta tell you, this place is just beautiful and is remarkable for a city of a little under 100,000 population. A very big city feel yet nestled between the snow capped cascades just to the west and the high desert to the east. My joke about Bend is that if you don't need a Tiffany's or a Barney's, there is everything you might want right here. People are happy and very friendly. I do miss the Bay Area after being on the air there for so long. Still lot's of friends there. Good thing there is jet service from here to all major west coast cities including SF. Makes it easy to get places.
AND...I'm still quite a way from that 60th Birthday! I'm still skiing and riding and have more years to cover before getting any AFTRA pension or social security, than I want to think about. The good news is that don't need a walker and I still stick pins in those damn letters I've been getting from the AARP! I'm convinced that organization has it's roots in hell! I used to hate it when someone would say that they listened to me in high school...I probably was only 3 or 4 years older than they when I got my first gig in SF on KFRC. I think I was the youngest guy on the station then...maybe still.
Speaking of the statios I worked in SF. I'd say my two favorites were, KFRC (of course) and also KYUU. We had so much fun at both places, I couldn't begin to tell you how crazy it was. Working with Osh, Dr. Don, Jeff McNeal, John Mac, Steve Kane (who also is in OR in Portland) were remarkable. Not to forget the outstanding PD's...Mike Phillips, Drew, Stone.
Oh...and K101 was quite a trip too. Those days with Jim Gabbert were actually quite fun. I worked with him for quite some time. Right through his TV-20 days. That spanned about 15 years or so. Those days on camera doing "Twilight Zone" marathons and drop in's at the "Sleazy Arms" were a blast.
San Francisco Radio was a lot of fun...I do miss it and the people as well.
All the best to you all...thanks for remembering...and Hi to John Mack!
Jack

Hi Jack, I am curious, what radio station are you working at in Bend, Oregon and what shift do you work?

Kenny, did you read my comment? My comment was about Jack not fitting on WILD. It had nothing to do with whether or not he knew how to capture an audience. The sad fact is that I've played airchecks of KFRC, from the heyday, for college classes. The young people, who are in fact interested in pursuing broadcasting, found little compelling with what you and I LOVED. Today's young people have had so much more entertainment stimulation that the greatness of what KFRC meant to you and me is lost on them. I agree with you on your point (with exception of Art Laboe, but that's for another board). In the same way that the music of that era means little to young people, it's the same for those personalities and in fact, the stations that they made so great. So while young people today may have missed out, they'll be telling their kids about the great DJ's of their day, like T-Man or The Doghouse :) :) :)

Oh and Jack...glad you're not quite 60! I knew JMF just hit the big number and figured you were at least "close"! (which only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades!)

You and me both, Jack! It's great to hear from you. I don't think I ever caught your appearances on the "Sleazy Arms" broadcasts on TV20. Those were great "only in San Francisco" broadcasts. There always seemed to be a lot of inside jokes on that show, including the hunky bartender. When Jim Gabbert "came out of the closet" a few years ago, I was kind of surprised, because I had always assumed he was already 'out.' Gabbert managed to do some fun things with that station - especially in the early years when money was tight...like the bumper-stickers, "3-D" movies, and the classic TV marathons years before TVLand. I heard he made a fortune selling the station (by then a WB affiliate), and as far as I'm concerned, he deserved every penny.

Back to radio - hope to hear Jack Friday back again in the Bay Area some day. And yes - Bend, Oregon is a beautiful place.

Bossjock,
I totally agree. It's one thing I always keep in mind when doing a format. You HAVE TO be relatable to whatever audience you are playing to. I would have nothing to bring to the table in a WYLD type of format. Here, I've had the chance to actually do Hot AC for a week. It was great fun and even though the demo is lower than my age...I still felt relatable and credible. We have 5 stations in our group. Hot AC, Oldies, Classic Country, Classic Rock and Lite. I track a regular shift on the Oldies station and fill live on the others when needed. It really is a great gig, since it allows me to exercise various delivery styles. Also doing free lance vo in Central Oregon and am in the process of setting up the home studio as well.
Also, forgot to mention some other names that were compadres along the way. Don Bleu, Beau Weaver (who is still doing very well in LA), Mike Novak, Tom Parker (saw him recently), Peter Laufer and so many others. When I think back, it was and still is a wonderful ride.
I'm a very lucky guy.
Regards,
Jack
