The CMA Awards (November 1, 2012)

I don't know about the rest of y'all who come here, but who I am surprised to not see in there are the following.

Josh Turner
Rascal Flatts
Tim McGraw
Montgomery Gentry
Gloriana
Chris Young

They have been all over the radio with their newest songs and yet they are no where to be found? Wow...and I am not even a Chris Young fan.

God bless you and him and the other acts that I named always!!! :) :) :)

Holly

The awards are always rigged.

Kelly Clarkson nominated for female vocalist? Seriously? Might as well have nominated Katy Perry. The only song Kelly Clarkson has had worth mentioning on the country charts is "Mr. Know It All" which only made it to 21. Martina McBride is also nominated for female vocalist? "I'm Gonna Love You Through It" reached number 4, but in 2011. She has not broken the top 40 this year. For entertainer of the year? Brad Paisley? The hasn't released a single all year. His last single, Camouflage, tanked. Miranda Lambert blows him out of the water as far as who has actually done entertaining for the year.

I will be honest, I don't know why we have award shows. Why are we rewarding people who have already been rewarded with millions of dollars and endless fame? All this does is add to their already over-inflated egos. Why must we reward them on national television? I don't know about everyone else here, but I know I don't get rewarded on national television (nor would I want to be). Heck we don't even get 30 seconds when a disaster affects a large group, but these people get 3 hours several times a year. It is ridiculous.

^^^ You are right about singers already being rewarded by what they get from those who buy their albums and go to see them sing live. Trace Adkins is who said it best: "Awards don't pay the bills."

God bless you and him always!!! :) :) :)

Holly (a day one fan of Trace)

P.S. The actual award shows are still good to have though because the singers can use them as a way to introduce their newest songs by singing them on the show and in generally, its a way for fans to see them sing live and not have to leave home in the process. I am sure that a lot of people miss out on seeing the singers when the singers come to their area anyways due to one reason or another. Tickets to see them can sadly be expensive.

Didn't she do some duet with a guy named Aldean? Or doesn't her part count?

Fifteen years ago, Alison Krauss won a bunch of CMA Awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year, off the strength of her version of "When You Say Nothing At All." The song didn't even go to #1. She never won another award. I'd use the Alison Krauss rule for Kelly. She was in the vicinity of greatness, so she should share in some of the benefits. Name some other females who should have been nominated. Lorrie Morgan? Jean Sheppard? Wynonna? Trisha Yearwood? When was the last time any of them had hits?

Having said all this, awards like these are a function of the voters. Who votes for the CMA? Mostly Nashville music industry people. Writers, labels, managers, concert promoters, publishers, agents, lawyers, and other people with vested interests in the success of certain artists. Winning doesn't mean you're the best. It just means you got the most votes. That's it.

^^^ Sadly I have to agree because sometimes a person's talent may not be the reason why they get voted for in the first place.

As for Alison Krauss, she got four back in 1995 and since then, she has actually gotten five more with her last one being the award for Vocal Event of the Year with Robert Plant (another rock singer) back in 2008. :) :) :)

God bless you and her and Robert always!!! :) :) :)

Holly (a fan of Alison since 1994)

True.

Honestly, I have always considered the lead singer as the singer and the other singer as unimportant. The music industry disagrees with my opinion, but honestly Kelly Clarkson could have been replaced by anyone. Although she played a decent part in the song, Jason was the important one. Technically the single was released in 2010 and should not be included in these awards, but the CMA has never been one to pay attention to dates.

the CMA awards these days is a crock of BS. i'm with my ol buddy, the L8 GR8 waylon, who pretty much said the same thing back when i used to watch this charade in the 80's and 90's. yet, i will be tuned into the Americana awards with host jim lauderdale today at the ryman. now them alls the real talent in my book. all that pop polished CMA eye candy entertainment jive is more geared for the arousel of the fast paced urban city people, who have little knowledge, or grasp of the roots, the people, or the players that paved the way to what this thing called country music has morphed into.

I used to think it was the Grammy Awards that couldn't be taken seriously when it came to the country categories. For years, it seemed all the nominations went to the country crossover pop hits. Now in recent years, the Grammys appear to be getting more daring and edgy, while the CMAs, as well as the ACM Awards, pander to popularity over innovation.

Well, what's to be expected when you have advertisements like this one for Monday night's CMA Music Festival with the sub-heading "Country's Night To Rock?"

^^^ Hey! I just read what you have in your signature. What song was #1 on June 30, 2000? That was my 18th birthday? :) :) :)

God bless you always!!! :) :) :)

Billboard's No. 1 song on June 30, 2000, was "Be With You" by Enrique Iglesias. But you bring up an interesting point. Which chart? The DJ I referred to was on a Contemporary Hits (pop) station. Since you've asked this question on the country board, I feel it's only fitting that you should know the No. 1 country song on June 30, 2000, was "Yes!" by Chad Brock. I leave the interpretation up to you, but you seem like quite an upbeat person by your posts; therefore, what could have more of a positive influence on one's life than a song called "Yes!"? ;)

Now for something with a little twist in all this. My dad's birthday is also June 30th, although he has quite a few years on you. Would you believe his name is also Holly? God's honest truth. Actually, his name is Hollis, but he goes by Holly.

^^^ Wow! ;D ;D ;D

God bless you and your dad always!!! :) :) :)

Holly

P.S. And thank you for telling me what country song was #1 on my 18th birthday! :) :) :)

And she deserved it. I used to listen to a station that played the recording that was put together from that and Keith Whitley's version. Fantastic!

Sadly, that station went Spanish, but there was another one in the area which gave up playing new songs about that time, though I've never heard that particular recording on the other station.

I'm not interested in any night to rock.

Thanks to VHS, I can just watch it later and fast-forward through all the mess. I can even feel safe taping from the digital channel and risking pixellation, because maybe it will just happen during the performances. It has been my experience that the nominations on this show lean more toward actual country music. But as far back as 1992, I've been disappointed in what passed for country music on this show. Even whatever George Jones sang that night when they put him in the Hall of Fame sounded like garbage to me. I might change my tune now. I can't imagine not liking anything George Jones does.
