the commercials are over now back to the music...

Seems sort of quiet today on this rainy Friday........what do you think of the liners i have been hearing around the country that say......the commericals are over now back to the music.............obviously a cume builder but does this alienate the advertisers? especially in smaller markets? this less is more theory of 2 clusters of 4 or 5 units is this good?......do long music sweeps really help? are they feasible in drive? when i was selling radio some of the more savvy advertisers felt those liners drove listners away from their ad.............have a good weekend all....c ya on the fm this wkend

Three questions:

Q: what do you think of the liners i have been hearing around the

The liners are supposed to be funny--the station poking fun at itself. Doubt it does anything for cume. Advertisers who get upset should get a life.

Q: this less is more theory of 2 clusters of 4 or 5 units is
> this good?

Sure, if a station can afford it. Easier to do for a top-rated station in a major market where advertisers are standing in line to buy avails for top dollar. Harder to do in State College with the Consolidation King selling spots for $10-$15. Limit yourself to 8 units @ $10 and paychecks start to bounce.

Q: do long music sweeps really help?

Sure they help, if you're playing the right songs. If the second song is wrong, though, it won't matter--they've already punched out.

Q: are they feasible in drive?

Feasible? If YOU are programming the station, anything is feasible. What do you want "drive" to sound like? If you want it to be "information intensive," then the answer is "No." If you want it to be "More Music Mornings" then the answer is "Yes." Most stations opt for the former instead of the latter... but that doesn't make it right, does it?

1) "Done with commercials..." liners; Here in the Philly area we have John O'Hurley ('Peterman' from "Seinfeld") doing liners for "Ben-FM" (Phila. version of 'Jack' format) and when HE does lines like that (and all the other toungue-incheek ones he does) they are funny as anything. I've heard regular voice guys try to pull them off and it doesn't come across so well.

2) I've always been a fan of frequent, short stopsets (2 spots and a promo max) for my AM drive show. (I think it keeps the forward momentum rolling.) But no matter what the clock looks like, nothing works without the air talent doing a good job of forward teasing.

i agree somehow i can't see brian christopher or paul turner adding humor....
actually I used randy thomas and she has quite a good sense of humor....at the end of my session liners she would add a few she thought were good in a humorous spin......

i have never been sold on the 50 minute sweep thing...1. most arent listening for 50 minutes even tho we want em too......2 short sets get them back to the music faster(theres a tried and true liner)....John O'Hurley thats William Morris Agency...great expensive talent there....and speaking of the Jack format listen to 937mikefm.com Will Morgan does a great sarcastic job......

Just the opposite for Brian Christopher...he was on a sister station when I worked in upstate NY and he was f****n' hilarious!!

Jeff Berlin does a great job with sarcasm, character voices and straight reads!! Dave Foxx is another who does sarcasm VERY well.
Edited by mistermicrophone on 07/09/05 01:33 AM.
