The controversy about dance music on radio-info

:D

I have to admit, I find it actually AMAZING how when you go on other boards in here and talk about dance music, it becomes SOOO heated and highly debated and ends up being the most talked about topic on a given market!

Philadelphia certainly stands out as we've gone over 110 posts (not counting the 9 that went to "Take It Outside!" LOL. There was good talk on the Albany board as well. The L.A. board has enough heat in there going! I still have to learn more regarding Central Pennsylvania but in comparison to other threads, dance has certainly generated a lot of talk/criticism.

In that sense, I'm proud because even though this may be just a "radio message board" the talk has certainly generated heat and could possibly be a catalyst for further change in markets to add this format (whether pure dance/rhythmic CHR, etc.) on standard radio (not just relegate it to HD).

I'm still trying to figure out why the haters.....REALLY, VEHEMENTLY hate it the way that they do. I can only give part of that to the disco era. But still....there's never one person around that says that dance is okay. It's either that you REALLY love it, or REALLY hate it! You certainly see that reflected in posts and it causes huge controversy!

I guess my wonder is....could what we do in here actually be a catalyst for change??? I had said "possibly" earlier, but could this board have some potential effect?

Bulletin Boards have always been a place where people can vent or lie or provoke under the cover of phoney names and not have to face up to the fact that what they are saying isn't actually factual.

I would also ask those that post info in defense of dance music or dance stations or dance industry personnel, actually have the correct facts when replying. I've seen way too many opinions and assumptions stated as fact here and on other boards lately when they aren't even close to being factual.

You can never "lose" an argument when your using facts.

Just my opinion...

As we know, I have no problem using my real name (as often as possible)...
and it's well known that dance's downfall in recent times can be equated by the failure of dance radio to embrace the brilliant series of edgy dance singles from, umm,er, what'shisnameagain?

Welcome to the world of the arm chair PD. You have too many people on these boards that think they are experts and have never worked a day in radio in their life. The famous oh that will never work comments are always the best. These come from the same people that are trapped in the 1970's talking about how those stations and DJ's were the best.

These message boards are not the place to fight the war. General listeners dont go on here. Take the word to the streets. We need to show the success stories. Radio companies are not going to jump and start a dance station because someone posted it on here. Think of it this way. If you were going to buy a car dont you want to see research before you buy one? They want to see ratings, how much a station is bringing in revenue wise. Plus they wont start stations that are going to compete with their own in the same market.

People can tolerate dance music without loving or hating it. Most of us here, with the exception of a certain punk rock legend, love dance music. The people who go clubbing like dance music, but they aren't as fanatical about it as us. A lot of people don't know much dance music. I have been to so-called "dance parties" in college, the DJ is an iPod, most of the music is hip hop or even rock (ughhhhh), the dance songs are old (Better Off Alone, Be My Lover, stuff that was on Night in the Roxbury, etc), with only a few random dance hits (Piece Of Heaven, World, Hold On). People won't discover new dance music if there isn't any on the radio, because they are too lazy to look for a source of it. There are not many people who can program a dance format for mass-appeal. Dance fans who find a station they like are loyal to it, and will want to support it any way they can. The commercials can fit the high-energy theme of the station (Party 105 is mostly club commercials and businesses that appeal to the 18-24 demographic).
