The Cosby Show Pilot Episode: Question

I have a question about The Cosby Show pilot episode. In the scene where Clair asks Cliff "why do we have 4 children?" then Cliff answers "because we did not want 5". Why was Sondra excluded? Did they exclude her because she wasn't supposed to be part of the cast? Also Clair was a housewife with no job in the pilot and then she became a lawyer from the 2nd episode on. The house also was different in that they had a cheap looking stairway in the pilot and the dining room table was in the front room. Why did everything change from the 2nd episode on?
 
Obviously, Sondra was added later. Remember "Chuck" from "Happy Days" (2 different actors but was never seen or mentioned again after the first season.
 
The "Sondra" character was not conceived (excuse the pun?) until later on. The Huxtables originally had just 4 children.

Sondra came along (whichever season it was) as a college student coming home for the summer or something. Also, keep in mind that actress Lisa Bonet (and her oldest daughter character) was eventually shipped off to the A Different World spinoff and then eventually shipped off that show entirely when she became a "problem". The Sondra character probably added that "4th child" character back to the family unit.

I looked it up in http://epguides.com/CosbyShow/ and Sondra was brought in on the Thanksgiving episode in the first season, which is what I thought i had remembered.
