The countdown to Spike O'Dell's departure continues

With three months to go until Spike's announced "retirement" from Chicago's #1 morning show, Bob Sirott is filling in this morning on WGN. That's sure to get the rumor mill crankin'. He's got 30 years of visibility in the market, much of it on TV, and has had his foot in the door at WGN doing part-time and fill-in for more than a year.

And in what may or may not be a related development, Fred Winston filled in for John Williams on Saturday morning.

Stay tuned.

This morning Bob Siirot filled in for Spike. Frankly, I thought he sounded like a little old man. Maybe age is starting to catch up with him and he won't make the cut after all.

I'm a big WGN fan. Loved Wally, then Bab, & now Spike. Wen these men took the morning reins, they sounded comfortable there. I don't like John Williams or Steve Cockrane, but they both sound comfortable filling in for Spike.

When I heard Bob Sirott sign on this morning at 5, I was happy that he's finally getting the chance to do a morning. I like Bob more than John or Steve. But, as I listened to Bob as the morning went on, he really sounded uncomfortable. He's definitely not new to the radio/TV mic, IMHO he didn't sound like he belonged there.

I gotta give WGN credit: they're giving everyone who is interested a shot at the morning show. Feder reports the details here: http://www.suntimes.com/business/feder/1186339,CST-FIN-feder26.article

That has been WGN TV & Radio's M.O. for decades. Pretend to do on-air auditions, search the globe for the best fit and then prmote from within. The slot is going to John Williams hands down. 'GN will look for the cheapest alternative for Spike at the Mike.

As for Garry, no freaking way. There are still a lot of bad feelings from his years with Dahl where all they did for 13 years was bash Wally, Eddie, Uncle Bobby and 'GN as a whole.

I think the Steve and Gerry thing was a joke, byt non the less, I think you are right, John Williams is the best fit. I like Nick's Show, but he does wll at night and does the best fill in when Steve and Johnny are out.

Anyone heard any rumblings on his replacement yet?

I was talking with my parents last night and mentioned that it's kind of odd we havent heard much.

Boring! I guess my initial reaction to Uncle Bobby, yawnng and kvetching all the time, was bad. I grew to love him.

What kind of i-pod should I buy?

I called it over one month ago.

Yes, a pinwheel if you please

Glad to see Williams getting this gig. Of all the above-mentioned replacement possiblities, he seems better suited for light-hearted material, current events and intellectual heft -- without acting immaturely or talking down to the audience. Even doing evenings on WBMD in Peoria 25 years ago, he had a knack for introducing topics that appealed to the listeners' imaginations.

Anticipating arguments to the contrary, I believe that the lack of this imaginative and conversational quality is what plagues much of commercial radio all over. The guys who own stations love money but they don't love radio audiences. Fatal mistake, as we now nervously observe as our collegues are laid off, one by one, like in an Agatha Christie mystery.
