The Crock/Terre Haute

I can just Barely get it at my MOM and Dads in Morgan County Indiana, and not at all in St. Louis. Personally I dont think they have as good of signal to the east, as the old 97.7 frequency. Anyway, From what little ive heard, its a mixture of Mainly Upbeat Country Recurrents, from the 90s and now, and Classic rock from the 70s and 80s. They have a sweeper that says, (Your in for the Ultimate Redneck radio station..LOL, with Coutry and Rock together. The stations core artists seem to be the likes of Garth Brooks, Lynard Skynard, Brooks n Dun, Aerosmith, Ted Nudgent, Randy Travis, Hank Williams ect.. I havent heard any Current, or NEW Rock, or Alternative Music, it seems to focus on the Classics when it comes to Rock. Most of the Rock played, is kinda Countrish, and the Country the play, is more Upbeat, and Rockish. Its kinda like blending Upbeat Hip Hop, and Dance Music together, its basically a (REDNECK Party Station). IN fact they have a liner that says that.

Their liners are fairly edgy...for example there is one where they say "They're takin' the hill and throwin' it in the river. The Crock WSDM Brazil Terre Haute" (actually a top of the hour ID). I haven't figured out who the hill is, but the river is Emmis's 105.5. Another is a delivery room scene saying "you're the proud parents of a Crock".

Yes, the signal is weaker to the east than it used to be. I don't remember a new stick being built, though?

The thing I find odd about the Crock is that almost all of the music is from yesterday. I don't think I've heard any of the so-called Hick-Hop (i.e.: Cowboy Troy) on the Crock.

It seems to me that there are a lot of voices of the crock, but that could just be all the SFX they applied to the liners.

The Crock is a respectable effort at the very least. I don't know of anyone who is listening to it regularly, but I live on the fringe of the listening area.

Wish I could find that playlist a buddy sent me when he there earlier this month. Sounds like lots of trainwrecks with segues like "Comfortably Numb" into Toby Keith. Not really impressed, but one local message board is eating it up. Hard to say if the public is going to go for it.
______________

To illustrate the wretchedness of the format for those of you who havent heard it. This type of format done right could sound really good. IMO its not being done right. Any more questions?
______________

From the sound of many of the posts, they should have just stuck with Oldies Radio. I'm going to have to make a trip to Terre Haute just to hear how the station sounds for myself.

You're right, though. The format has the potential of being a success, but combining formats like this takes a PD who has a background in both country and rock and has a good ear for scheduling the music in such a way that it doesn't sound like a complete trainwreck. Although, finding someone with such a background and a vision of how this format should be would cost money, which is something Crossroads doesn't have a lot of, according to recent posts.

I haven't heard the station, but from what I gather, they focus mainly on newer country and classic rock. Personally, I would go one step further and add some more current rock into the rotation as long as it fit with the format...Uncle Kracker, Kid Rock, and Cheryl Crow are all contemporary "Crock" artists that come to mind.

Heres that playlist a buddy sent me from earlier this month shortly after The Crock (what an unfortunate moniker) signed on:
RING OF FIRE--Johnny Cash
ROOSTER--Alice in Chains
liner
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald--Gordon Lightfoot
Its a Heartache--Bonnie Tyler
liner
Dig in--Lenny Kravitz
More Than A Feeling--Boston
Pink Cadillac--Bruce Springsteen
(liner, something about "Stay away from the River, there is a Crock loose)
commercials
liner
Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)--Styx
Horse with No Name--America
liner--same from before
commercial
liner
Margarritatville--Jimmy Buffett
Dont Stand So Close to Me--The Police
High Cotton--Alabama

Alright guys,

I've had a few kicks reading through the message board at all of your speculations and ideas, but this is getting ridiculous. I'm not sure what "friend" gave you our sample playlist, but they are mistaken. If you wanted a sample playlist that is geniune (as opposed to just making up songs at random), you could just have asked for one. For those who are curious as to what The Crock is actually playing, I submit the following sample hour:

Eagles-Already Gone

Tim McGraw-I Like It I Love It

Tom Cochrane-Life is a Highway

Steve Miller Band-Jet Airliner

Mark Wills-19 Something

ZZ Top-Cheap Sunglasses

Little Texas-Kick a Little

Styx-Renegade

Andy Griggs-You Made Me That Way

Van Halen-Oh Pretty Woman

Diamond Rio-Drink Swear Steal and Lie

Norman Greenbaum-Spirit in the Sky

Toby Keith-Whiskey Girl

John Mellencamp-Crumblin' Down

We have never played Lenny Kravitz or Alice in Chains. Thanks for playing.

Lovingly,

Ummm...you may want to update your music logs. That's Michael Peterson, not Diamond Rio.

Typo. Way to be on the ball though. Thanks.

"We have never played Lenny Kravitz or Alice in Chains."

Wow dude. If those are the only two songs on that list you've got a problem with then I stand by my original statement that this format isnt being done right.
______________

Many apoligies oh God of Programming. Since you obviously know everything there is to know, could you please enlighten us on the way it should be done?
