The Cumulus Golf Card

You read right... Cumulus - owners of area stations like WGNI - is hawking a "golf card" to listeners to get discounts for local golf courses:

It's original, I'll give them that. And I'm all "fore" (pun intended) more originality in radio. But a "golf card"? Have we officially run out of ideas?

When you are desperate to put dollars on the air Cumulus management is pushing sellers to pull every rabbit out of the hat. In a huge golf area this make sense to me.

It probably means more to the golfing audience down there than Cumulus' HalfPrice HookUps mean to most of the buying public in Fayetteville.

Up here if you buy a 20" box fan for The Fan Club at Home Depot for $14.99, you can also get a coupon for some new sandwich they're supposed to start touting at Chick-fil-A. So that's "something." :)

I hear ya. Since I hardly ever play golf anymore (not sure I really played when I did "play") that offer would not really effect me one way or the other. Would feel that kind of offer would go a long way in a huge golf community like Wilmington. Not so sure about the Home Depot fan deal.

I forgot to include that WFNC is doing The Fan Club, with the Home Depot/Chick fil A connection. They've done it every summer since the 70s I guess.

I view this as a very niche promotion something that the masses would not be really into. Now the Home Depot thing would. Yes there are a lot of golfers out there, but not enough (in my opinion) to justify doing it. If a station is desperate for money this is not the way to go.

Double J, do you think for one minute they would do it if they didn't make some money on it? They invest little, sell a few hundred, and make some money they wouldn't otherwise have made.

Well, apparently, they must be making some coin off of this promotion, because other Cumulus stations are apparently doing this, too... Just Google "Cumulus," "golf card" and "incentrev" and other stations will pop up with similar promotions... I know - typical corporate radio to try and farm this out to other stations...
