The Cushest Job in Seattle?

I thought it would be interesting to start a thread on who has the easiest high level job in Seattle Radio. This includes talent, management, etc. who essentially do their job half-ass but still somehow manage to get paid handsomely. I'll offer a few....

1. Lazlo at KNDD: I've heard from sales people that this guy puts as little as possible into his PD role and only cares about his afternoon show. He and his wife will also work 4-5 hour days so they can spend time with their child. Yet he still somehow collects a PD level paycheck even with a struggling station.

2. The GM at Sandusky: I had lunch with 2 AE's recently and was told that this guy does absolutely nothing and works his PD's to death. Then when a station begins to tank, he's able to spin it in a way that puts all the blame on that PD and none of the blame on him.

3. The PD at Jack: I had an AE tell me back in January that unless there is a management meeting, you will not see this guy before 10:30-11am each day. Then after a long lunch, there is a few hours of scheduling music and making sure the JACK voice guy has sent his material, and then he's out the door by 5pm.

I would think one of these 3 should be at the top of the list. Am I leaving out anyone?

I can't comment on the KNDD PD or the Sandusky GM. I can speak with some authority and assure you that the JACK PD spends a great deal of time on his job. Automated radio with no talent may seem simple but the complexity lies in the execution. It is harder than it looks. The PD's, GM's or Talent that stay at work 10 hours a day gossiping or networking on the phone have the cushest jobs. You just don't see it in my humble view.

Heh...the Jack PD staying for a cup of coffee then going home. That's a good one.

Y'know, if it's true, he's doing one hell of a job. Even if it's not, he's doing a great job. The Seattle Jack station sounds better than most other Jack stations I've listened to on-line. Jack sounds more local than some live stations in Seattle.

I thought for sure someone would say something about Kent Phillips, but I guess there are other agendas to be aired out.

If you want the cushest job in Seattle, try doing one of those seemingly hundreds of studies that have been done for the 520 Bridge replacement. How many of those have been done? And at what cost? Hell, you can probably afford to move next to Bill Gates' place in Medina after you get paid for all those.

From a news/talk aspect, that's easy: Dave Ross. He putters into Eastlake in his hybrid car from Mercer Island to Eastlake (10 minutes), arrives at 8:50 AM (Yes, his commentary and "early edition" are precorded); his producer has everything ready for him and he goes by the topic summaries provided to him. 11:59, he's out the door and back to Mercer Island. An 18 hour (maybe) work week.

radioprofessor,

Obviously you are a new addition to the CBS family since it seems all you can really comment on are the doings inside that building. I have no reason to believe that those AE's, who have been there for years unlike you, would make up something like that if it wasn't true.

Corp. Suit:

[EDIT]
Dave Ross is in the building EVERY day by 6 a.m.
He almost always does his morning KIRO commentary live in the studio.
He writes and produces all of his own commentaries.
He also writes and produces a CBS commentary every day. Yes, sometimes those are pre-recorded. But who in the hell do you think pre-records them??
Yes, he has a producer. But, trust me, Dave is the ultimate producer of his show.
If you don't like his show, fine. Don't listen. [EDIT]

[EDIT-inflammatory]

You learn something new everyday. I had no idea JACK even had a PD. As I glance around the country I see JACK PD's are really programming other stations and just oversee a JACK as a secondary role. I just assumed Infinity was already doing that with the PD at 106.1 or 102.5 also programming 96.5 on the side.

Actually they do...it's a share with AM1090, but my impression is Jack is the primary time focus. There is additional support to manage AM1090 day-to-day (plus most talent is national).

Hold on cowboys. Seems to me the only cush jobs are hosts for soft music liner stations. I don't even know these people's names, but reading liner cards doing some production and going home each day ain't that tough. Been there. 8) You couldn't pay me to be a PD. Most I know in this town work their butts off going to meeting after meeting. Some got airshifts and most do music :-\

For the record Dave Ross is one of the hardest working guys if seen around and the PD at JACK works damn hard. Like him or hate him Lazlo puts in more time than most think. Can't comment on the Sandusky GM or Kent Phillips Lot's of GM's I know got it kinda cush until upper management gets to town

My vote for the hardest working is BJ Shea who thinks about radio 24/7 the guy is nuts. Fitz does the same. From what I understand Shelly Hart has about 5 jobs at Clear Channel, so does Kent Phillips (though an early post seems to disagree) and Tony over at KMPS :-[

I'd like to point out that unemployment is pretty cushy. ;)

and ps..... Shellie Hart and Eric Powers are 2 of the hardest working people I've seen in this business.

Listen "Tex" no one here is fooled about your identity so you might as well just say "Me" when you say "Fitz" alright!
Now that we have that out of the way I agree with Raizin, Shellie & Eric work their asses off.
I can also tell you that Kent Phillips works his ass off too not just at KPLZ or with Northwest Afternoon but with everything else he has going on with the playwriting, theater groups he works with all that he's not an ass either.
Bj is a hard worker but he also has borrowed quite a bit from Tom and to some extent from Stern but then again we all try to emulate those who are most successful in our chosen profession.

Yo Cowboy. Not sure what got ya fired up. I actually agreed with you about Hart and Powers and never said Phillips didn't work hard that was an earlier post. Don't even know the man :-\
I'm not Fitz but am a fan. Am also a fan of BJ, Tony T, Shelly, Eric and others I listen to or work with or know. To my way of thinking outsiders tend to think people don't work hard (like PD at JACK or Phillips) when they got no idea how much they do. I also think the folks at MOvin get a bad rap and from what I can tell they work damn hard :p
In the end the key thing is do you win year in and year out. Those who come in late and leave early and still get big ole numbers well more power to em ;) Cush airshift job has got
to be talent on the Soft AC, JAzz or other "long sets of music" format. The airshift is cush but the talent may have other duties that make life a bit less cush. Less cush ???

I can tell you that some salespeople have the cushest jobs in town while others work their tails off. I assume the same is the case for talent and programmers. I actually kind of admire the sales types who bill like crazy while fitting in a game of golf during the day and working half day Fridays. If you bring in the number, more power to you. I guess one could say the same for talent. If you are in five minutes before your shift and out the door five minutes after, but deliver big numbers. More power to you. They people I feel sorry for are the ones that work their tails off and get no numbers. (sales or programming) Been there at times in my career and it is tough. My advice, keep working hard and maybe one day you'll be the person who can work less and make more. I have no respect for those who work little, get bad numbers and blame others. No excuse for that.

Hello McFly???? There are no "cush" jobs in radio right now. People are being laid off, commissions are being cut, advertisers are cutting their budgets and/or spending more money on the internet. Unfortunately, (or fortunately for the medium), those of us who love radio are willing to stick it out through the blood bath.
