The CW in North Carolina

I'm interested to know some opinions as to who exactly will get to be the official CW affiliates for both the Charlotte (WJZY or WWWB) or Raleigh/Durham (WLFL or WRDC).

I live in Charlotte, and my best guess for there would be WJZY. The Observer said that WAXN could be a candidate but I imagine it will go to WJZY. It was reported in there that they are tied with WUPA in Atlanta for the 5th-highest rated UPN network in the country, and its programs are consistently ranked in Charlotte's Top 10. Plus WJZY is the oldest of the three. WWWB is also owned by Capitol Broadcasting but the general manager talked like it would be on WJZY and not WWWB.

I honestly have no idea about Raleigh. I am very curious as to why WLFL ended its affilation with Fox and went to the WB. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, WLFL must have really done something to tick Fox off. And now Fox is on WRAZ out there, who keeps preempting controversial reality shows. (I wouldn't have a problem with it but there were probably some angry viewers in Raleigh).

I wouldn't count WAXN out in Charlotte, if Cox wanted the affiliation. They have the top rated 10 o'clock news and could easily do a popular morning news block. They have a sled of highly rated syndicated programs such as Judge Judy and Judge Mabelean Ephram (Divorce Court), and of course Andy Griffin. Of course, Cox may prefer their awful reruns of Phil and Oprah to the CW. If WJZY gets the CW, they may have to refocus their local programing quite a bit since it seems apparent that most, if not all, of UPN's urban programing will be dumped (unfortunately).

What about in the Triad? Will CW go with WTWB or WUPN (there are two call letters that will need to change)? Is it possible that WTWB/20 will go after the ABC affilation, leaving SINclair to beg for the CW for WXLV/WUPN?

At least WCTI-DT has an over-the-air signal.

The ideal situation would be for our two Pax stations to be sold to the CW as O&O's. At least they would have viewers and they would not be the total waste of spectrum and electricity they presently are. And you can tell them I said so.

Here in Denver, we have the recent purchase of KTVD 20 by Gannett, who would, due to KWGN 2 being owned by Tribune, wind up without a network. This begs the question as to how the announcement will affect the completion of the sale of KTVD to Gannett - or will it?

It also begs the question as to what Gannett will do with KTVD once they take possession of it. My bet is they'll either use it as a bargaining chip to purchase a network station somewhere else (not likely) OR (this is the most likely scenario IMO) they'll simply run it as a traditional Indie ala KRON 4, KTVK 3, WJXT 4 (only better managed & programmed) that would focus on LOCAL programming which would include OTA rights the Nuggets, Avs, and (maybe!) the Rockies (assuming FSN and Gannett can work out an arrangement for airtime that is).

As for KTXU 57 in Colorado Springs (the current UPN affiliate), they will simply become the CW affiliate regardless of whether or not they remain with KXRM 21. KGJT 27 in Grand Junction (the current UPN affiliate) will probably no doubt become the CW affiliate there.

BTW...If anyone wants to read the entire article on the official announcement of the merger, it is available on the DENVER board (No, I didn't post it. I only saw it there). Just FYI. :)

Cheers :)

WLFL switched from Fox to the WB at the same time sister station
WTVZ/33 Norfolk did so (I believe KRRT/35 San Antonio also switched
from Fox to the WB around the same time). Perhaps the WB offered
a better comp deal.

As for the Triad, I don't look for Channel 20 to get the ABC
affiliation; for one thing, the station does not have a news
department. My money's on 48 getting the CW and ABC staying
on 45.

Yeah, "WGWB" is so exclusive they are not on any OTA signal at all--they are cable only. AT least WCTI-DT is over the air, and their OTA audience will increase rapidly now that digital recievers are becoming available. WCTI-DT is also available via satelite, "WGWB" is not. Even so, I would guess "WGWB" will get the affiliation, if they can come up with some local programing. You do realize that "WGWB" is totally a national programing service 24/7, with local commercials and promos inserted, don't you?

Then again, I think if neither WLFL nor WRDC wind up switching, maybe WRAZ will switch to the CW and WLFL will end up a Fox affiliate again.

Have you been under a rock? It's everyone on this board.

Not meaning to go off-topic, but I am also wondering what the situation here in NM is both UPN and WB stations. They are both owned by the same people(ACME). My bet is on KWBQ becoming a CW affilate.

Someone mentioned WILM-LP as the CW affiliate in Wilmington.
Is that someone suggesting that CBS is going to lose an
affiliate for the second time (remember that Channel 26 was
CBS before it switched to Fox)?
