I am asking this question because it relates to a local market (Louisville)
as far as local TV is concerned, even though I have it the Kentucky radio
board. There is a lot of buzz going down about the merger of the UPN and
the WB networks of which both will discontinue operations and will merge
into a new entity known as The CW Television Network which will be 50%
each owned by CBS and Warner Bros. How will this affect the operations of
WBKI(WB)and WFTE(UPN) in the Louisville market and what station do you expect
the new network to end up at locally? just curious.

I'd expect WFTE to wind up with it, especially if Gray Television (WKYT in Lexington, WYMT in Hazard) gets CW on their HD channels.

Their is a very good chance that WBKI could wind up with CW, since they do have carriage on both Lexington and Louisville cable systems, and reaches a substantial portion of the state with its over-the-air signal.

Their are some interesting implications either way, especially now that WHAS-TV has a 10 PM newscast on WBKI.

Speaking of Louisville TV, why has WYCS moved from channel 24 to channel 138 on Insight?<P ID="signature">______________

Insight moved WYCS at the first of 2006. They claimed WYCS wasn't serving the community. Orignally they wanted to kick them off cable all together, but, after a petition and meetings with the Metro Council WYCS shoved them there.

It wouldn't surprise me if WBKI becomes the CW Network affiliate. WBKI is one of the highest rated WB affiliates in the country. They have a larger coverage area than WFTE, although WFTE's currently has a better on-air signal in the immediate Louisville area. Also, WBKI offers promotions and an energetic on-air presence that attracts the 18-34 year old crowd. Plus, WBKI has the most local programming (outside of news)in the market and they have the WHAS 10pm newscast to tie in with the CW network. It will probably be a tough battle. It will be interesting to see which station becomes the CW Network affiliate.

I am sort of hoping that actually happens that WBKI ends up as the CW afilliate
in Louisville, after all it is carried on cable in both Louisville and Lexington plus WBKI was voted as the WB's 'Best Afilliate' for 2005. the station
covers more area in the state than WFTE.

It should be noted that WBKI-TV, WBKI-CA, and WBKI-DT all have different coverage areas. WBKI-CA basically serves as a fill-in for the Louisville area since WBKI-TV is so far south. WBKI-DT covers a good portion of both Louisville and Lexington proper, although it covers less of Southern Kentucky than WBKI-TV.<P ID="signature">______________

Yeah, I know it's been a while since anyone has posted on this topic but I didn't want to create a new topic just to have one simple question (relating to this topic) answered. Does anyone have any updates on WBKI-DT? I mean, It's been forever since WBKI put in an application to the FCC requesting a change of their COL to Bardstown, and the FCC still hasn't acted on the application yet. There is not even a service area map for this potential move yet.
 
I have not done an extensive search through WBKIs FCC Applications (There are dozens of them!) but I found this coverage map for the station (DT). You may have to scroll down to find WBKI:

The above, I believe, indicates the "old" coverage. They have a CP to build a new tower E of Bardstown. Somewhere, I saw a map on the internet showing this coverage, but can't seem to find it right now. I will post it if I find it.


Here in Lexington, I have no problems receiving the WBKI-DT signal with an outdoor antenna. The Analog signal is also "snowfree", so I think they may be using the tower east of Bardstown.

I did see where the application for this seems to be hanging in limbo, however, at the FCC. Both the analog (ch34) and digital (ch19) WBKI signal are quite strong here which made me feel they might be using that tower near Bardstown. The older tower, well south of Bardstown, would probably not deliver the strong analog and digital signals to me here in Lexington. For the record, I only receive one other Louisville area DT station 100% of the time....WBNA-DT (DT-Ch8). I don't even see their analog signal (Ch21). Once the analogs are shut off, I will lose WAVE here in Lexington as they have a very puny DT signal.
 
i can receive all louisville digital channels at least some of the time i haven't gotten all of them at the same time yet. i cannot receive any digital wbki at all. i CAN receive both wbki analogue signals. i'm hoping the dtv transition is put off for quite some time until wbki can get a stronger dtv signal in the louisville area.
