The CW now available OTA in the RGV

Stations KSFE 67 McAllen and KTIZ 52 Harlingen have been broadcasting the CW since about August 6. Both are low power stations that previously aired MTV Tres. They still air MTV Tres late at night. They are airing the entire CW Plus lineup. Fox affiliate (and sister station) XHRIO began airing CW promos in July including one that said the CW was moving to channel 21. The stations are branded as "CW21" as they will be on cable channel 21 in the coming weeks.

so now they will be able to get WWE Smackdown I was down there one thanksgiving when it was still on UPN and the place I was staying I couldnt get UPN at the time

With XHFOX on 48-3 and now the CW on 48-4, I think KNVO is one of the very few stations in the country actually taking advantage of multicasting.

Any thoughts on whether the Valley has anywhere near enough DTV receivers at this point to make this worthwhile?

More stations multicast than you think. Every TBN station has five feeds. Many Univision stations offer Telefutura. Others offer 24/7 weather or 24/7 news. Still others offer music video services such as THE TUBE or LATV.

Remember also that a low number of DTV receivers can be offset if there is a low cable/satellite TV penetration rate. Cable and satellite services don't always offer the digital subchannels.

Yup, the TBN station here, KLUJ 44, has five channels as dhett mentioned.

Well there's probably not as many DTV receivers here as in other markets, but the number is increasing. The past few times I've been to Walmart, I've seen at least one person buying a digital tv. Not necessarily an hdtv, but dtv nonetheless. And they're only about $150 (some even less). So if a person's old tv stops working, chances are the new one they'll get will have a digital tuner.

Is KSFE on TWC yet? According to tvguide.com, TWC still has KMHB on the air in its usual channel 53 slot, with CSPAN2 on ch.21. Also, none of Entravision's RGV sites (especially XHRIO) even mention a new CW channel.

Hmmm...well, that demonstrates what *I* know about the Valley, having been out of there for quite a while! :-[

Given the terrain and, as I remember, the difficulty in receiving even an analog signal from LaFeria in, say, North McAllen, what kind of antenna does it take to pick up these subchannels 40 or 50 miles from LaFeria?

No, KSFE is not on cable yet. It took TWC a while to put FOX HD on and it's taking them a while to move The CW to channel 21 too. Entravision has never mentioned KSFE or KTIZ on any of their websites even though they've owned the stations for more than a year. Nor do they mention KFTN Ch 30 from La Feria. They do run promos for CW21 on radio station KVLY 107.9 and XHRIO from time to time.

It's not difficult to pick up the digital channels at all. All I have is a regular $10 indoor antenna. Even most of the analog channels come in okay. I'm about 30 miles from the towers in La Feria. I don't know how difficult it is for people in Rio Grande City to get the signals.

I just noticed today that myfoxrio.com is now carrying the listings for the CW channel.
