The CW "Outsources" Its Sunday-night Block; Two Dramas, Two Comedies Coming

The CW has signed a deal with the production finance company Media Rights Capital to take over its Sunday-night programming block, where Everybody Hates Chris, Aliens in America and The Game currently reside. As part of the pact, MRC is contracted to develop two dramas and two comedies, and sell ad time for them.

The CW (and the WB before it) traditionally has had a very rough go of it trying to gain traction with Sunday programming/ratings. It is believed that by pawning off the quagmire to a media conglomerate, the netlet can focus its attention on Monday through Friday — where, ostensibly, EHC and/or The Game could find new homes. (Per Ausiello, Aliens is a goner.) — MWM

Not sure CW has enough smarts to put anything on air worthwhile given the 'real' networks are having so much trouble with far deeper pockets. CW isn't even good for reruns.

By Outsourcing you mean, cutting back on one day of programming to cut costs ;D.

Historically the CW hasn't done much on Sundays anyway, so it will be a relief on them.

I hope My Network TV will do better next year than The CW now that they have WWE Friday Night Smackdown (A PERFECT FIT)!

Ion did the same thing a while back, outsourcing weekend evenings to RHI. Only Ion may be in control of the ads.

Since CW affilates are paying the network (reverse comp), they should protest by dropping this block.

CW and My Network TV have not done well since the start (thus why the WB and UPN merged into the CW) The WB and UPN, like CW and My Network TV, were two small networks with challenges from digital cable and the internet (the core audience of all mentioned are heavy internet users, and are probably spending more time on YouTube then with the traditional TV).

When Fox started in 1986, there was not the internet, and cable was only 30 channels. It took them a few years to get off the ground. It took the deal with the NFL to do so. Unless the CW gets an NFL or other major league sports deal, it (and My Network TV) could fold faster than anyone predicted (and I thought My Network TV would have folded already).
