The DATE with Ron Chapman contest

KVIL decided to hold a contest called "Evening with Ron Chapman" around the 70's .
Ed Busch was hosting a dating connection show on WFAA -AM on thursday evenings, and it was a very popular show.

Well all the contestants had to do was just send in their names and occupations on why they wanted to go out with RON. Only women, let's clarify that:)
Well one contestant was chosen, and later ..SUED. Her reason was Ron took her to Dinner, then back to his place to watch "The Tonight Show".He said that was a typical 'Ron Chapman evening". The winner was expecting a limousine,a high class restaurant, and hitting a few hot night spots. All she got was him driving her in the KVIL-O van to "Chicago Pizza"and then his place. She claimed it was false advertising, etc..the other part? She "looked like a winnebago with legs" according to the production director and promotions director at the time. She settled out of court for an undisclosed but very modest sum. Needless to say the contest was never ran again.

Probably one promotional venture he was quickly ready to forget.

I heard the story differently, unless what I heard was a second attempt at such a lame contest! Ron never went out with the contest winner, and she sued for $15,000 or so, and eventually dropped her case. This was in 1982/83. I ran across an old "D Magazine" that contained the story, but that was a couple of years back and I don't recall all the details.

One might be inclined to ask, why would a station set up a date for someone with a MARRIED man??? I don't think it was billed as a night out with Ron *AND* Nancy...?

This well before he married Nancy, and The D magazine story contained errors. The info.I got came straight from within.

I heard a much different story. I'm inclined not to say what I heard because I think it's probably an urban legend. It doesn't matter; it was a failure and Ron lived happily ever after with Nancy!

Gotcha...thanks. I didn't realize that he and Nancy had married that late in life. Was Chapman married before? Or just 'married' to his job?

His first wife's name was Marilyn. Those of you who are over 40ish might remember her from the national TV spots for Scott's Liquid Gold furniture polish, just to cite one example. I think she continued with VO and VOC work for some time, and may still be doing some to this day. When they were married, their house was just off Mockingbird Lane near Lawther Drive. He drove a Rivera during those years that frequently had it's hubcaos stolen. (No, I didn't steal them!!!)

Geez, the trivia I can remember at 2:30 in the damn morning! Think it must be time for sleep!!! Nytol...

Yep, I remember that woman, vaguely. Wonder if Ron remembers he has any children?

That's not far from Hugh Lampman's old place, which apparently was a regular hanging-out spot for radio types for many years. Wonder if that was part of the catalyst for their teaming up to put the "new" KVIL on the air in '69?

I heard it was a difficult birth, with the baby doing all this pointing and clapping and gesticulating during the "PUSH" phase.
