The Day The Music Died

CC is basically killing local programming in small markets and replacing it with national syndication (Premium Choice). It's a sad day for radio.

I noticed that many of the DJ's on CC's WKLS Project 96.1 are also on other CC active rock stations.

For example, check out the active rock station in Chattanooga, TN and The Buzz out of Greensboro, NC and notice "Aly" is a dj on all three. CC and the cloud is both killing radio in my opinion but CC is leading the pack with this.

You can kiss your farm system for new on-air talent goodbye.

that's a shame too...seems like it's hard enough to get into the business as it is...now, they're making it an elite club

CC started early with the Newnan/LaGrange cluster, namely WCOH AM1400. This was a heritage station with quite a history of service to the community going back over 60 years. Like so many hometown AM’s it had an older but fiercely loyal audience. People who grew up with the station regularly followed in their parent’s footsteps and became loyal to it as well. Most importantly local merchants continued to support the WCOH but little by little things began to slide during the last 10 years. Less attention was paid to the station and she limped along with The Ludlow Porch Show, Old Time Radio Shows, The Trading Post, automated Classic Country and Sunday Gospel Music programs. Yes, this certainly sounds like a dying format and it was but rather than give thought to a format that would breathe new life into the station CC gave it a quick and final blow in early 2009. Satellite delivered sports talk replaced the hometown station’s format. Locals rejected this new format and now in late 2011 CC would probably be just as well to shut off the transmitter and turn in the license. Newnan High Football did remain for a few seasons but even that’s gone now as is the local staff. Maybe WCOH lived on borrowed time for a number of years but even in the shadow of the Atlanta market with the right programming and attention perhaps she could have made it to 70!

ClearChannel was never interested in WCOH or the LaGrange stations to begin with. Their only purpose in that acquisition was to get 96.7 and move it closer to Atlanta. If you remember.....they were the only ones who could do that because of short spacing to 96.1.
Why they have killed off those stations is a mystery. There have been offers but CC has consistantly rejected them. The stations have been orphans ever since Joe Pedicino left. First they were managed by Jimbo Martin/CC Columbus....who was only interested in the 98.1 signal. Then Macon took over.....I have no idea how WCOH/WVCC/98.1 fits into their overall strategy.
I engineered WCOH for over 20 years and I remember how much that station was loved by the community. It is indeed sad to see how the life has been drained from her. But remember.....it was not only ClearChannel who killed local radio. It was the evolution of the way goods are sold in small town America. It's Walmart.....and our desire for low prices (Chinese junk).....and convenience. That's what is causing small town radio to cough up blood - that's the main reason why WCOH is a throw away today.
The mills have closed (moved to China and Mexico...thanks NAFTA).....the small businessperson can't compete with Walmart....and small market radio has no buyers for high school football. And it's not going to get any better.....

Goodbye, farm system; hello, farming out locally-programmed dayparts!

"Green Acres, we are there!"
