The Day The Oldies Died

Us - what do you mean by that PW crap?

I think you understand - PW is praise and worship. I find it laughable, if not impossible that KSBJ's audience is 20% teenagers. If it is, they are compelled by parents who won't allow anything else. I don't think 20% of KODA's audience is teenagers, therefore I doubt 20% of KSBJ's is. To the kids - and to me - praise and worship is milk diet cr_p. I want some spiritual meat in my music. Psalm 150: 3-6 Psalm 33:3. I want it loud and victorious!!!

KSBJ was supposed to be the station for kids - never to sell out to the anti-CCM forces. That is what we were told. I come back after 23 years and find out that we - who contributed seed money to the vision of a true CCM station for kids - have been betrayed. And there is not anything we can do about it. Ichabod.

Air one, Radio U, KVRK - streaming audio here I come!!! And so will as many kids as can understand the flyers I am working on.

I always thought that KSBJ was for everyone - and it is CLEAN and gore-free (news) so that the kids can listen. I've been listening for years, even when Buddy Holliday was on there - and I never got the impression that it was for kids - teenagers, anything but for everyone. It helped me get through a divorce and the death of my father - so it is good for something!

Let me make sure you understand the numbers: of the persons who listened to KSBJ in August, 20% of them were between the age of 6-17. It's not 20% of teens, it's 20% of their cume.

Since you asked, 14% of KODA's cume came from teens in August. You see a lot of spillover like that among the adult stations. The meter picks up what's on in the room; it doesn't tell you if the person likes what they hear. ;)

Both stations are aiming for roughly the same audience, and it's not people under 25.

But as far as all religious formats in the market, it has far more listeners of any age, and it's on a rimshot. Only KROI comes close, and that's an entirely different genre.

Thanks for explaining that - it sounds like the kids are in the same room or in the car with parents who listen, and probably are driven out of their minds! The younger ones probably would prefer radio Disney, the older ones KRBE. I get how it works ---

I had the same problem sorting through ratings on my daughter's TV show. The blasted football, American Idol, and stuff like that junk up the kids ratings because of spillover. Ratings are an imperfect system. No doubt one that can't be fixed.

Kids CAN listen, but almost none CHOOSE to. Teens are a forgotten demographic, surrendered to secular stations by KSBJ and other stations like them. Something that the church can ill-afford to let happen!

I am glad it helped you through rough times. I really am. My argument isn't with you - it is with whoever it is, way back when, that hijacked the kid's station so they could have a praise and worship jukebox that grandma pharisee will support financially. That is called playing it safe. If they had stayed true to the original vision, which obviously you have no knowledge of, I firmly believe they would be even MORE successful than they are now. You don't win converts in predominantly Christian countries - that is playing it safe. You go to Afganistan, Pakistan, and other countries where the risk is great, but so is the reward in terms of souls saved. Teenagers are not a ministry a lot of people like. It is tough, it is brutal, the kids are really secular. But their minds are also more open than adults, so the reward is great. KSBJ - they lost that vision. They lost their way. They played it safe, and a generation of Houston kids have probably suffered as a result. It is not something I wanted to see happen. I wanted that station to be there for them. Adults have KHCB. Kids had KSBJ at one time. Now - they have KRBE. You tell me which one is healthier for them spiritually.

Well, the Planet LightForce show continues 9 to midnight Saturdays, which is Christian Alternative. At one point they had a 24/7 web station going, but I think that got killed by the royalty payments issue. There has been talk of adding a second station for that format so they could cover both formats (similar to EMF having K-Love and Air 1) but good luck finding a signal unless it ends up on 89.7 HD-2.

How did we go from the day the oldies died (but they never did) to Christian broadcasting? <Sigh>

How do any of these threads go after 190 messages - like the whispering in ear game around the campfire. Both formats -oldies and CCM, though, have disenfranchised listeners in this area. And - the count of Spanish language, talk, sports, country bumpkin, Jacks, Bobs, top 40 / CHR continue to go up as overall radio listening goes down. Coincidence?

And - the count of.... country bumpkin,

"Country bumkin?" No wonder you take such a position of entitlement about 60's oldies.

Country is a marvelous and engaging format when well done. Calling it "bumpkin" reveals a lot about you and your attitudes.

I vote for either KUHF or KPFT for "healthy" radio....listening to those two stations (sometimes by force, sometimes by choice) made be a more well rounded person and more appreciative of other forms of music & entertainment than what I usually listened to (KLDE or other oldies stations).

Then again, I'm one of those secularists who isn't too keen on most religious doctrines - even my own (Judaism) gives me the willies at times.

Priase Jeebus and check the plate current....

This is sad. Perhaps the FCC should revoke all Class C licenses and hand them out to Junior Colleges.
Bet they would be 100% more listener involved.
Bet they could sell tons more air time and provide something useful to the community at the same time.
Come on guys, a brick could tell the current methods aren't working.

Grew up in Midland. Great place to be FROM. Rednecks need to die in searing agony. Seriously - the radio dial there was pathetic with top-40 that censored songs they didn't like. If you wanted uncensored, you became a DX'er. Plain and simple. DX wasn't a hobby. It was the only way to hear the music I wanted. But - Kanye West made me a Taylor Swift fan.
