And it's only made in Canada (specifically Ontario) because of the tax deduction or whatever the government does to get shows produced there.
The only shows that I can think of made in Canada that are shown the US are, as you stated, many of the programs on HGTV (except, of course "Decorating Cents" (aka "We found this beautiful, refinished dining room table in a dumpster"), which is set in Minneapolis). There are two other shows, though, "Degrassi: The Next Generation" and "Instant Star", which are produced for Canada's CTV but also air on The N.
An idea would be to have CBC, CTV and Global to place their best Canadian programming, add CTV's Canada AM and CBC's The National, and create a cable channel for the United States. BBC America is similar in taking programs from different networks (So Graham Norton aired on Channel 4) and placing them on one network to essentially provide the culture in a nutshell.
I'm surprised that some systems are dumping Newsworld when the change takes place, specifically because the channel was purchased in note because of its cable carriage. To me, at least, Current TV appears to be an interesting concept. The theme of the moment seems to create different uses of television and radio to keep viewers and listeners away from the internet and iPods, and by providing new alternatives such as KYOU, Air America, Jack FM, and now Current TV, the existing media resources will have at least a few more years of life.
