The Devil Went Down to Georgia

Folks, let's take a poll!

Do you like the SOB version better than the SOG version? Why?

I personally avoid using cursory remarks as much as I can but the SOB version really kicks me in the pants. It scores much higher on the emotional scale.

I like my CDB unedited completely, with SOB version of the devil went down to georgia and the original version of Long haired country boy (CDB has said that any newer versions he ever plays of this song (I don't know if the albums would be edited too) would edit out him talking about pot use ...

RFLA

True, because of his born-again Christian status.

I saw him in concert several years ago and he does the "SOG" version in concert now (I don't remember if he did "Long Haired Country Boy" or not). I do prefer the old redneck hippie version of Charlie Daniels than the Christian ultra-right winger he's now become.

If I remember correctly, in 1979 when the song was a current, Country radio and Top 40 radio played the SOG version while Album Rock played the SOB version. Which makes me realize this has to be one of the few songs in music history that hit those 3 charts at the same time.

Another interesting thing about "Devil" to me is that it's one of the oldest songs in most country stations libraries, yet is a favorite among the youngest of listeners. It's a timeless song and story.

That's not what "cursory" means.

cursory -- adj, Performed with haste and scant attention to detail

**Talk about irony**

"Profane" is probably the word you wanted here.

BTW, I prefer the SOB version, too.

Thanks for the english lesson. I was going to actually go further and say "I try to never speak in cursive". It was more of just a "sounds-like" joke. I'm actually glad someone did catch that.

Sarcasm and dry wit are always tough to do in cold print.

Quotation marks would have helped on that.

"Cursive" would have been funny.

I hadn't heard about the born again status but I know he went ultra conservative though..

Now it's to see what other "red neck hippie" songs he will tear up in the name of being born again..How about Uneasy rider talking about "tokin' on a number"?

But anyway, the lyrics on his site reflect his new style with the edited version of "The Devil went down to Georgia" and "Long haired country boy"

BTW for those wondering about the edited lyrics of "long haired"

Old version: " 'Cause I get stoned in the morning, I get drunk in the afternoon"
New version: " ' Cause I get up in the morning, I get down in the afternoon"

Old version: " I don't want much of nothin' at all but I will take another toke"
New version: " I don't want much of nothin' at all but I will tell another joke"

It was said, he changed the lyrics "because he didn't want his music to influence a new generation with bad things" if I remember the news articles

Maybe as it is said, "It's best to remember our heroes as they were , not as they have become"

Here's my favorites one about that song. Circa 1981, I was working at WSAN, 1470AM in Allentown, Pa., a country station. With the Pa. Dutch influence in the area, I got a request once for "The Devil Made Once Down To Georgia Motion." I was so stunned by it I said "HUH?" so my ears could hear it again.

His song "Sunday Morning" was used on the Rise Up show as the theme song and Charlie was a regular guest on the show talking about his Christian beliefs. I'm not sure what the Rise Up show is like now since John Ritter moved the show off of Superadio...since we no longer carry it.

In the late 70's Charlie broke some new ground putting the word SOB
on a record. In 1973 his record Uneasy Rider had the word "a**" bleeped
out on the single itself. Nowadays, what record company or radio station
would bother editing such words? Compared to the language that goes out on
rap stations, Charlie's stuff is tame. Country music has always reflected
the voice of the people. I applaud Charlie for cleaning up his act, but
there's no need to mess with the past. Charlie said SOB because he was
talking about the damned devil... and there ain't no bigger SOB than that!

The real irony in this whole thing is that back in 79 when CDB released it, top-40 and album rock was all over it and country stations would not even touch it. Along with other stuff from the 70s such as the Eagles,Marshal Tucker, even Lynyrd Skynyrd. Today it is being called "classic country". My how the times have changed.

No kidding.

What passes as country legends today... let's see... Alabama...
Kenny Rogers... maybe even Dwight Yoakam.

Shame not enough stations play REAL country legends... you know...
Buck Owens... Marty Robbins... anybody ever heard of these guys?

LOL

The Classic Country DJ's have the same dilemma as the other so called Country DJ's: Try your best not to play any song that actually sounds country.

I don't know why Country DJ's fear playing Country music.

If I wanted Pop, there's plenty of soft rock and adult contemporary stations out there.
