The difference between Rock formats

Relating to the thread below me (Active Rock countdown)...I noticed or realized there's 2 charts and 2 radio formats that define rock. "Active Rock" and just plain "Rock". I glanced at these charts, and being from the 70's and 80's...what are the differences? If I was to listen to both formats on the radio.....where would I hear the format difference?

Here in the San Joaquin valley there are two stations right next to each other,KRZR 103.7 which is owned by CC and KFRR 104.1 owned by Wilks.KRZR is considered ACTIVE ROCK and KFRR is just ROCK. The current playlist are very similier. Both play Metallica, but KRZR leans more towards Slipnot where KFRR would lean more towards Coldplay.KRZR will mix in Classic like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Motley Crue, where KFRR willonly play music from 1990 to today.

between the 2 formats.....is one more hit-chart leaning, and the other just leans on deep or mostly non-hit rock material?

Both stations play mostly new music ,KRZR retro music is more AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin. were KFRR will play more Nirvana, 3 doors down,Nichelback ,music from the 90s. But there currents are very close to the same. the reason is with 2
classic Rock stations KKBZ 105.1 and KJFX 95.7 cover all of the Classic rock.KKBZ plays AC/DC,Metallica, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, 3 Doors Down,Pink Floyd ,Def Leppard and all 70s 80s and 90s, up to 2005.THE FOX 95.7 is more 1965 -1989. with the same AC/DC and so forth but KJFX will not play Metallica because they Own KFRR.

to ad what I'm saying Fresno has 4 Rock stations where you can hear AC/DC and so forth. We did just lose JACK-FM to TALK RADIO, They decided there format was overcome to KJFX 95.7, KFRR 104.1, KRZR 103.7 and KKBZ 105.1 THE BLAZE. Now there KMJ-Fm. they played Modern Rock,Classic Rock, new rock .JACK did leave a hole for Modern 80s, but But the 4 stations I mention cover all of ROCK except New wave 80s.

Yes KFRR 104.1 would be more hit chart lean ,where KRZR 103.7 some non-hit Extreme Metal.

I forgot to mention that KRZR 103.7 will NOT play bands like Coldplay, or even U2 its considered to LITE for them.

From what I've heard and read, Rock stations are usually ones who sound , is more traditional leaning and usually plays more classic rock than active rock stations. Coldplay and others is more approaching alternative though

Active rock is usually the newer hard rock songs such as your slipknot etc that a rock station would normally shy away from

I think RFLA's description summarizes the musical difference very well. I will add that as a result of it's more classic rock leanings, "Rock" (sometimes referred to as AOR) attracts a slightly older audience, with a median audience age of around 38. The harder-edged "Active Rock" has a median audience age of around 30, closer to the Alternative format.

If you look at R&R's Alternative vs. Active Rock vs. Rock charts, you will see a lot of overlap.

All Dallas rock stations have a component of Classic Rock as part of what they deliver.

It's really sickening to think that the same Ted Nugent, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC songs have to appear on so many outlets.

Monotony Overkill and Copycat

That about sums up the "wonderful" Dallas-Ft.Worth commercial rock offering.

Radio is about choice....OR SO THEY TELL ME !----

So whether you're tuning into 93.3, 92.5, 97.1, 100.3, or 102.1...... You'll jear some over-played "Crappic Rock".... or some crappy Active rock.... Guaranteed!!

If they all went away tomorrow, I would not feel one bit of loss. Becasue I love rock music.... and what they play either sucks, or is moronic, or is over-played (that's the same thing, I believe).
