The big news here is that Gaslighter is the trio's final album for Sony Music. So it's possible their next album will be for someone else.

They also say they will not self-release their own music. That just means they want to get paid.

Dumb question: Why would self-releasing their music prevent their getting paid? In an age of downloads, do the major vendors (Amazon, etc.) reject minor labels or self-released music? The Dixie-less Chicks have been around for a long time, and I would think that they or their management could figure out how to make money without a major label if they wanted to.

Making money is different from getting paid. They sign a record deal, and it usually involves an advance. So they get paid regardless of sales. The label takes the risk. If they release it themselves, they take the risk. Most artists in their position already have the money to fund a record, and they're willing to take the risk in order to own the masters and control the product. It sounds like they want that advance money and use the label resources rather than do it themselves. In today's world, you release a record as sort of a loss leader that is meant to drive people to concerts and other ticketed events where they can make more money. The label also shares in that revenue. But perhaps they aren't sure how successful a tour would be, given their aging fan base.
