The Doors - L.A. Woman - single edit?

I work afternoons at a 60 / 70s station & from time to time I get a request for The Doors' L.A. Woman. I don't mind playing nearly 8 minute songs... except during drive time! Ugh; that's half of the drive for most people here.

I find conflicting info on the web as to whether or not L.A Woman was ever released at a single, and whether or not it charted. I'm also having no luck finding an original 45 to see if it was edited or not. A "Collectibles" double-A sided reprint is on eBay, but the listing is generic & neither shows the label nor gives a song length.

All of the CD versions I've located are the full-length version of L.A. Woman.

Does anybody know / has anybody ever seen a 7" of L.A. Woman, & do you know how long it was? If there WAS a radio edit, do you have any idea where I could get a copy?

I've made an edit here today that isn't too bad, runs just over 5 min, but I'd much rather have the "original" edit, if such an animal exists.

Thanks in advance for your help! I don't want to have to wait to play this request until after 6. :)

Never charted, never was a single. No edited version. Light My Fire was edited due to Top 40's pressure rules if it was to receive airplay back in the days of '67. No records in most cases recorded over 4:00 seem to be the rule. It was a very popular album track that got played on underground or AOR radio that picked up popularity over time with the Doors, just like Zepplin's "Stairway to Heaven". Classic rock formats of the 80's seem to make it a reborn track.

I'm with Starbucks... have never found an edited version...A couple of years ago, I did my own edited version using Adobe Audition 2.0, for an oldies station that I programmed, it's at 4:53min ...........If you want to compare to your edit to mine I will be more than happy to send you an mp3 file, e-mail me at [email protected] LA Woman has many odd transitions, the original 7:56 version sounds choppy in many areas,so an edit may also sound choppy, it was an editing nightmare. I chopped that long intro and some of the tail-end using the fade in-fade out features, and plucked some redundant riffs in the middle.... Anyone else who would like a copy e-mail for your mp.3

I personally would edit out the "Mr. Mojo Risin" part, because the song seems to drag a bit in that part. At least to me, it does. But someone else will probably come on here, and say that that is their favorite part of the song! To each his own, I suppose.

For those of you who have created edits, can you post some youtube links of your work? Thanks.

yes in most cases...but mofo risin picks up speed, hard to edit that part....most doors cuts (good example ..long version of "light my fire")have long riffs by Manzarek or krieger that are rfedundant and that is alway a good place to snip......then comes the question why are we editing any way...only in dire staits, when the boss demands it.

LA Woman is just one of those great album tracks that is not a commercial type sounding record. it's just a great live concert track and a good song to place on an album. The arrangements doe not make it a great pop/rock song. Even for 1970.

I tend to agree with your assessments of the song; Morrison sounds VERY drunk to my ears, leaving me wanting to cut HIM out and just leave the instrumental jams... NOT what the listeners want.

I disagree that I'm cutting because the boss insists; I'm cutting because people want to hear more than one song on the way home, & if it's between editing L.A. Woman or not playing it during the 5 o clock hour at ALL, they'd rather me edit it.

I was rather shocked to get a COMPLIMENT from the listener who requested it, saying it sounded "great!" WTF?!?

I suppose there are those who really do feel some songs are self-serving and drag on too long... for them, a radio edit is a god-send.

To me, I was both pleased with how smooth the edits sound, yet disappointed that some of the music I really enjoy from the song is gone (& yes, "Mr Mojo Risin" is still intact, sadly).

As far as posting it on YouTube, I'll need to learn how to do that, first. :) Give me a little time, & I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for all the great replies! This has all been an incredible learning experience. If I'll ever get around to sending hornet61 an e-mail, I look forward to hearing his edit (which I think shaves almost 30 sec more than mine).

Yes to all of the above........listener appreciation during drive time has got to be the toughest...so you have make it easy for them...i tried to edit 'Like a Rolling Stone" and "Positively 4th Street and I said to my self this is sacraligious to edit Dylan....to hell with boss , and I never touched them... The only other edits I did was "Susan" by the Buckinghams and "A day In the Life" By The Beatles, to eliminate that similar noise pattern on both. I also reduced the three false endings on "Come On Lets Go" by the McCoys from about 3 seconds to 1 second. Other things that i did to make us different from the "cookie Cutter Oldies stations" was use various alternate versions "Mack The Knife", "Do Wah Ditty",
"Whiter Shade of Pale" and many many more...the difference was so slight that the average listeners had no clue but the collectors would and they used to call and say "that sounds slightly different" if thats an alternate version ..."We Like It". The rest of the staff had no clue.

(Opinions welcome!)

I checked It out.....your version is superior to mine......you were more clever by talkng out the change of speed transition in its entirety. I didn't think of that. Good job!!! we did the same exact edict front and back, unforutnately I the choose the wrong areas to cut out.

WOW... thank you! Not having heard yours, I can't say... but I appreciate the kind words nonetheless!

(BTW, if anyone wants / needs a high fidelity copy of this for airplay on your local station, let me know & I'll be happy to get it to you.)

It was certainly a learning experience, using everything from straight edits to fade, etc to get it "right." One of the things that bugs me is when it changes to "I see your hair is burnin' / Hills are filled with fire..." I'm not aware of a volume boost on the instruments as it plays normally, but when the instrumental part is cut, it seems to "jump" in volume.

I follow some guys on another message board ("Top 40 On CD," http://www.top40musiconcd.com/forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8) and they're sticklers for getting the "right" version of hit records... down to the point they make their own edits of album versions if that's all that's available, & list the edit points so others can do the same!

I doubt I'll go to this much effort again very often, but these guys do it apparently all the time...

Thanks again for the kind words!!!

There was no edit for L.A. Woman. The full length song was released on Elektra's "Spun Gold" label, with "Roadhouse Blues" as the B-Side.
