The down 'n dirty in Burlington!!!!!

Agent 006 & 7/8ths here.....going undercover for some real interesting gossip out there right now. Seems that several people have supposedly been interviewed for the General Manager job at Hall Radio in Burlington! Is a longtime GM leaving...or getting bumped into something more important? And could the big #2 item be the reason why?

Item #2 in the heavy-hitting rumor mill is that Hall is in talks with Burlington Broadcasters to buy the Wizard and Buzz. Both are on the market at a hefty price. If that happened Hall would most likely have to sell off the smallest FM signal of the new cluster at 105.1. Would they move Kool to another frequency or let the format go? Hall gets two big signals and, more importantly, might keep another major player from taking the 100,000 watt Buzz signal and competing with them head to head with country. After all, WOKO has more than 3 times the next closest station in listenership. Is anyone EVER going to wake up and go country against them? Even if a new competitor only received 30% of the WOKO audience it'd still be good enough to make them #2 overall in the market! This ain't rocket science!

I will maintain my undercover vigil and see if any of these stories end up as fact. Agent 006 & 7/8ths saying "make it stirred not shaken" and..........out!

CC tried this with Kix 96.7 years ago when they were still Capstar (Remember them? How about Chancellor Media? Good times.) It's not like they didn't market it. They actually had a custom designed CCTA bus.

Of course, 96.7 is nothing compared to WOKO's signal, which is why they got trounced. And that was back when there were only two counties in the market (Chittenden and Franklin). Now that the folks on the New York side get diaries, the only way to even consider competing against WOKO would be to get your hands on a 100K stick. Hall may run some cheesy stations, but they're shrewd business people.

To my knowledge, there are only 3 100K sticks in the market: WOKO, The Buzz, and Star. Star owns older chicks. Perhaps BB is of the belief that if they flip country, they'll have to sacrifice either their exclusivity with young males or the heritage rock station. Perhaps they'll have to give up neither with the advent of HD. But that's assuming they have the money to do something like that, which I seriously doubt.<P ID="signature">______________

Actually Star doesn't even come close to owning older women. WOKO easily has three times WEZF's shares in women in the "older women" catagories.

Like most everybody else, I haven't seen Arbitron data for Burlington since the Clinton administration. How about "Star owns older women who don't want to hear country?"<P ID="signature">______________

But from the first post of this thread what does this mean for wkol 105.1? their format is gonna change? and if so to what?

I would love to see 105.1 WKOL's current oldies format changed to a classic dance format like Mix 102.7 has in New York City. I think that format would do real well for this area Burlington VT and Plattsburgh NY but i would hope they keep all the djs except Rod Hill. I don't like him as a dj or program director. He is very nasty towards his loyal listeners. Rod should be the first guy fired. The other djs especially Jon Brooks i really look forward to hearing everyday.

Wow, did Rod Hill somehow wrong you? Sheesh. Are you going to kick his dog too?

I don't think classic dance in and of itself would play well. You can't have a narrow gold-based rhythmic station in a market like Burlington. There's a lot of unfamilarity with most of the songs that such a station would play. Of course, that's not to say that none of those records would work. MP seems to play its share of classic rhythmic titles.<P ID="signature">______________
