the downfall of K-104

Does anyone know what got the ball rolling causing K-104 to slip? I know that the Beat is a well put together station, however they had been around for several years prior to this happening. K-104 dominated for so long and managed to stay on top. I know that they have always been known to get themselves out on the streets and were very interactive with their listeners. Personally I would have simply left it alone and continued to enjoy my ratings had I been in power over there. I doubt that they will ever enjoy those numbers again regardless what they might attempt in the future.

It may just be that kids musical tastes are moving on to a new fad other than hip-hop. Or they are getting their fill on KISS FM, and some are discovering 106.7 and 107.5. The beat also seems to be getting some attention. This from kids my daughter knows, what they want on the radio in the car. I actually like some of the music - a bit monotonous, some of the lyrics are filthy and disgusting, but it sure gives my audio system a work out! Any buzzes or rattles - the bass in that music will find them! I found a kid the other day so bored by hip-hop and other top-40 that they wanted WRR played in the car!

I think it started with the morning show. I am a firm believer that as the morning show goes the rest of the station goes. Skip Murphey and Co. was very unique, it was a show made for an older demo on a formated station for the young. I think a lot of people had there station tuned to K104 out of habit. Heck a lot of the Skip Murphy listener where original Tom Joyner listeners. But eventually those loyal listeners got tired of the hip-hop and 97.9 the beat became more fresh for the younger crowd.

I don't know about the morning show starting the problem, but the problem always lead to what the Program Director is doing. Like the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I think the PD was focusing too much on the rival station (97.9) and trying to stay #1, but its not working. I say bring back the mixshows, play more R&B and more variety of music like they used to, remain loyal in the streets, and stop playing the same songs over and over again and having the top songs going over 100 spins a week. Rhythmic and Top-40 stations do that repetive stuff. Not Urban Stations.

I couldn't have said that any better myself......

??? Thoughtful observations & opinions about an interesting question?

It's a pleasure to see that on this board. ;)

YES! Exactly!

K104 had something truly unique... and how many radio stations ANYWHERE can say that?! When Fly Jock went national and Skip Murphy came in, nothing was dropped. Numbers, people, reputation, nothing. Agreed, many of those listeners were Tom's, but V100 didn't do a thing to scare them away.

So then DFW goes national for urban radio. Tom, Russ and even Steve. Yet, Skip Murphy had folk laughing like crazy. THEN IT HAPPENED... remember the day when Skip Cheatham walked outside his front door and realized the FLAVA TV spotlight was no longer shining bright? He had to do something. But what? DriverSelect commercials, but nah. Thug it out, even though there isn't a hard bone in my body. Again, not so much. I know... stick my nose where it doesn't belong!

And so he did. He pushed away Wig. Brought his own talent to the show. Away goes Nanette. Then, when it was really bad, he focused so much on what Rickey Smiley was doing and Skip Murphy couldn't take it anymore. He's not bad on 105 'dot' 7, but let's be honest, he needs a whole crew behind him cackling because that is what HIS listeners are used to.

Downfall? Maybe. Downright crash? Indeed.

Good post VDV!. It all started when they started messing with the morning team, and if you think about it why would you mess with a show that has been number 1 for over 13 year unless there was a hidden agenda.
