The DTV transition, some "it's almost time" observations...

I'm not sure when it happened but WTXX analog 20 is either off the air early or have reduced the signal beyond my ability to get it, the digital is still on 12.

WGGB, a station that was going to switch it's digital to the post-transition channel 40, is still on 55 with less than 30 hours to go (will they make it?)

It's no surprise, and I'm sure they've been doing this for a while, WTNH & WCTX analog are running a crawl at the top of the screen letting viewers know they are watching a signal that is NOT ready and to contact their TV provider and let them know or purchase a DTV converter.
(hmm, did I really need to type that out, everyone has seen it before right?)

Maybe it's just me, but my over-the-air signal of WTNH-DT (ABC) was dropping out and pixelating here in New Britain at 11 PM (the Comcast QAM version on 90-3 was fine). WCTX-DT (MY) from the same site was strong as usual, at about 85%.

WFSB-DT (CBS) in Hartford said the following:

Analog channel 3 will end at 9 AM. Dan Kain hinted at a nightlight type of service for about 10 days without ever calling it that.

Subscribers to COX Communications in greater Hartford will see WFSB move from analog cable 2 to analog cable 3. I'll assume he means the viewers in Newington, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, Glastonbury and Manchester.

Hm. There's a technical reason it was on a different cable channel, right?

Yep, potential RF ghosting inteference. Not really an issue these days though.

Now there's a total aspect of this who DTV thing that I had completely forgotten, cable systems are no longer going to have the whole ghosting issue with a broadcaster who are on the same channel as the RF output or the converter boxes. I think that's why the converters were on channel 2 in the old United Cable TV system in Plainville.

Watching Analog WFSB right now, audio seems to be acting up now and then, and video is also acting up, but not in sync with the audio issue. The color dropped a few times and I am getting it strong enough that I know it's not me.

At 8:57am, they cut regular feed and Scott Haney basically did a sign-off, and then they showed that original sign-on of WTIC-3 that can be seen on YouTube. (Hey, at least they acknowledged it)

Now it's just a Logo with call and city of license, (9am) wait, they are repeating the Scott Haney thing, and the whole sign-on?

9:03 am, and here's the DTV sunset program with the logo in the upper right hand corner.

A quick jump to the digital feed still shows a crawl with instructions on how to go digital.

BTW: does anyone else have any info on actual sign-off times? I know I was thinking most were going to hold-out until nearly midnight, but as can be seen earlier in this topic, things might have changed (and thanks to KML-224 for posting that, I would have missed it otherwise)

WGGB DTV 55 seems to now be WGGB 40, I just did a rescan and they were gone from 55 (must have happened at 9am).

I show the ch 55 signal to be listed at 500kW ERP and ch 40 at 380 with a CP to go 460.

I hope it doesn't make a difference as I'm pretty much fringe area as it is. So far so good, I get it at about 63% in the rain. I wonder how normal weather will do.

In Portland, ME WCSH is broadcasting a nightlight loop on its old analog channel 6, main programming on 44.1 and their news loop on 44.2. WMTW is broadcasting main programming on 8.1 and News8Now/AccuWeather on 8.2. Its digital programming is still airing on pre-transition channel 46. All other channels in the market have already transitioned or are still in analog in the case of LPTVs. The transition time for WCSH/WMTW was 9AM today (so to speak in the case of WMTW.)

Ok, checking websites, WTNH says they will go off at noon, I assume WCTX is the same. WVIT doesn't list a time. WTIC's cut-n-paste page shows that it's 1 day 11plus hours since it happened??? No time listed there either. Even though WTXX is already gone, I felt the need to check it anyway and it's the same cut-n-paste thing Tribune has elsewhere .

WFSB - 3 09:00 (nightlight programming)
WTNH - 8 12:00
WTXX - 20 12:00
WEDH - 24 23:59
WVIT - 30 23:59
WEDN - 53 23:59
WCTX - 59 12:00
WTIC - 61 12:00

WVIT is going off at Noon.

I watched WFSB go off, it was cool having them show an old color pattern, sign on audio and the national anthem to shut things down.

WTXX off at noon? Ok, I had a feeling that because I have two different amps running into a combiner that I might have problems like this, but I've always been able to get analog 20 prior to this, so I pulled the amp for my Springfield Antenna out of line and I'm getting WTXX but at a much reduced signal than what I'm used to, so sorry for the false alarm, WTXX analog is still on.

I wonder if either station will have any fanfare? 40 minutes to go!

As far as the WFSB sign-off, yeah, I'm glad they did something, seems so many are doing nothing.

I got two 5 inch TV's going here on my desk in Hartford, I am going to watch WVIT and the station my boss started... WTIC sign off from Analog at noon.

BTW I never knew we had a RTN station here in Hartford. I wish I could pick it up in Newington. :) (Although I can get RTN off the satellite) :)
