The Eagle has landed in Burlington

lighten up said:
Yes there are other country stations on the fringe of the market

I wouldn't call WUSX "on the fringe". The signal from WUSX in just about the entire area (except into the mountains) is comparable on a standard car stereo with WOKO.

Hi, I got CHOM on a back of a set V shaped wire antenna that does not work this station knocks out CHOM.
Tried a pair of rabbit ears and put them in the north window of my 4th floor condo that looks north with line
of sight to the lake. Did not work, I drove to St. Albans the other day and CHOM kick out 97.5 just north
of Exit 18 in Georgia so their grade A signal must die there. In St. Albans CHOM still comes in as strong as
it did, they are lucky up there. The person I visited has a back of the set wired antenna on the floor and
CHOM was still as strong so it appears that 97.5 does not have a strong grade A signal in St. Albans.
I am still amazed that a new station would want to have a Country format, Burlington is not a huge
metro area that needs another one. We need a oldies station back that WKOL dropped. I also called
CHOM and advised them about this new station and the FCC and CRTC rules about cross border frequency
protections.

I just had a 30 minute conversation with the chief engineer of Chom FM in Montreal. I was so thrilled that he
called me back. He said they have known about this new station for months and he made a physical trip
down to Vermont as far as Burlington and then went over the ferry to Plattsburgh and drove north on
87 to the border and then north of 15 to Montreal. His comments to me were: 97.5 signal does not
cross over the border and does not interfere with theirs on the Canadian side. If it did then they can
turn it over to the CRTC board in Ottawa and they would in turn contact the FCC in Washington.
He said his equipment he had in the car showed him that CHOM grade a signal still goes a far as
St. Albans and to just north of Plattsburgh. He drove south on 89 and discovered the same thing I
did that just before Exit 18 in Georgia CHOM and 97.5 start battling each other on 97.7. He would like
any comments from radio listners about this issue and you can email him at: [email protected]
He also told me that Standard Radio thats owns, CJAD AM 800, CJFM 95.9 and CHOM 97.7
are upgrading the transmitter towers for CJAD that are located in St. Remi, Que. ( 6 towers )
and they will beam a stronger signal into northwestern Vermont and the Burlington area will notice
the change.

Cool, isn't CJAD the number one English station in Montreal ? Nice to see a Canadian radio company actually doing something to improve an AM facility, instead of applying for an FM. The CJAD daytime signal gets in really good all over the northern Vermont counties quite well already. I wonder if there is going to be any night time improvements since the signal drops down to 10kw with a pretty tight pattern. Love to hear the CJAD talk shows sometimes, when they talk about the Canadien Health Care system, if it's so great why do Canadians really whine about it ??

Yes CJAD is the best AM station in Montreal and for the eastern townships and northern New York and
Vermont. To bad the Am stations in the Burlington Plattsburgh Market take some lessons from them
to improve there ratings. I know when I am in Florida for the winter and thanks to the internet I
listen to them on the web. They have there transmitters in St. Remi, Que. about 20 miles south
of Montreal and about 20 miles from the border at Rouses Point. On a clear night you can see the
6 towers blinking if traveling west of of the village of Alburg on the crest of the hill as you travel
down grade on Route 2 to the bridge. Their 50,000 watt daytime pattern booms all over northern
Vermont and New York. St. Albans is in the daytime grade A signal pattern as well as just north of
Plattsburgh. Burlington area is in the distanced grade signal area but still is well received. I have listened
to them as far south as Barre traveling south on 89. I listened to them for years growing up in
St. Albans that as always been in the umbrella of the Montreal Media. In 1952 my parents bought a
AM/FM radio and the only 4 stations on the FM band where from there. CJAD had a FM station in the
40's but took it off the air and then in 1962 put it back on the air as CJFM 95.9 and uses the Transmitter tower onMount Royal that they call the Candlelabra that all the FM and TV stations use, except for
CKOI 96.9 that has their tower on the top of the bank building in downtown Montreal. They transmit
at 300,000 watts and are the only one in Montreal because of a mistake years ago by the CTRC
and were grandfathered with that power.

This is a reply to correct Mark Kavanaugh email address, he is the Chief Engineer at Standard Radio in Montreal
for CJAD, CJFM and CHOM. I went and left the A out between V and N sorry about that.
He would like feed back regarding the new 97.5 issues down here interfering with CHOM 97.7.
