The Edge 103.9 Picks Up Adam Carolla

<sigh> The only reason I listened to The Edge was for Chuck. I sure a heck won't be listening to Adam Corolla, I personally, think he is a moron. He was tried once before here, and it failed miserably. So much for The Edge.....

I don't know how radio works, I don't know how decisions get made, I don't know how deals get done, but I do know this, I'm going to miss the Morning Ritual and Chuck Powell.

I'd imagine I'm a fairly average KEDJ listener. I grew up listening to alternative in the valley (KUKQ in the day, KUPD when Dave Pratt was still funny, the Edge on 100.3/106.3, Party Radio 103.9 and finally the Edge after it jumped over to 103.9) and the only thing common to all those stations is failure. Don't know why. While Party Radio was on the air I was drinking buddies with one of their employees and he said Party Radio would fail because ratings cards were filled out by 13 year old girls who listened to boy bands. Probably true, as I've never been a 13 year old girl and never liked boy bands and I've never filled out a rating card. I guess those cards somehow dictate advertising cost and that determines revenue. Whatever, all I really know is I will NOT listen to Tom Leykis, didn't care for Adam Corolla on his first go around and don't really like talk radio (hot talk, cool talk, political talk or otherwise.) If KEDJ brings in some piped in show from L.A., I won't listen, the topics won't be relevant. They won't talk about the Suns game or traffic or lasts nights party at Dos Gringos (which I wouldn't have gone to these days 'cause I'm old and married and have kids) or anything that interests me about the valley. I'm fairly certain I'll just listen to mp3s on my commute...and mourn the loss of one more thing I used to enjoy about living here.

Anyone remmeber when vince and chuck had the cool kid segment in the morning a few years ago when this 12 year old kid would call in and chuck and vince would talk to him and then play his request it was amusing i might add.

Chuck Powell was the only reason I listened to The Edge ever. It certainly wasn't the music (nobody ever explained to me how the 90s was "Edgy"). When I moved back to the Valley in Oct 06, and found out that the Zone was gone and Dave Pratt went Country, I was extremely disappointed. I flip through the stations one morning, and low and behold, there's Chuck, Allison, and Collin. Awesome. At least there was something I knew, even if it was on a different station. That lasted all of a week. At least they retained Chuck and Collin. Cory James (right, right, right), and Drew were "O.K." but the whole show just felt limited and rushed. Nothing like the KZON days of Chuck, Collin, and Allison.

Chuck is the only DJ in the valley I can stand, and I'll switch over to whatever radio station he goes to. In fact, I'd love to see Chuck, Collin and Allison together again...Man...I wish they'd bring back the Zone...That was by far my favorite rock station.

One question, whatever happened to Greg Paul?

Oh yeah...And screw Carolla...I'll AVOID the edge so I don't have to listen to that jerk.

The way CBS is doing business now, they could bring The Zone back via Online/HD2 like they did with WNEW/NYC. Minus the personality.

As for Chuck Powell, he is a very versatile talent. He can do mornings on music radio or afternoons on sports-talk radio. And he can do them both well. The problem with his Edge show was that he would not retire long-running "characters" on his signature "Last Character Standing" segment - even after months of "Jerry the Dog" winning each week! ;D

Yeah, I like Chuck. He's too talented not to pop up somewhere again, soon. I like Corolla too, but I'd much rather have live/local in the morning. It'd be one thing if the show had sucked, but it didn't. Maybe the numbers did (I really don't know), but the show was pretty good. And so it goes.

I liked the Bi-Polar Bear character. Jerry the Dog's stream of consciousness interrupting catchphrase sign-off deserves a t-shirt.

Devryn, I think I heard Greg Paul doing the news on KFYI this weekend (Sunday afternoon, anyway).

was so great to hear ace man back in the valley today on the edge. He did spend a good part of the first hour talking about phoenix. He mentioned that two months after free fm flipped, his show had the highest ratings it ever had in phoenix and how great it was to be back in the valley on the edge. Even though I liked the ritual, I think carolla is a great fit for the edge and personally I can stop d/l the podcast a day late and listen to carolla in real time ;-)

Allaccess.com posted an interesting WSJ article about the fallout between Adam and former Phoenician Danny Bonnaduce. Not much love lost according and almost cost Adam his gig.

Here is the link to the Wall Street Journal's article. Not sure how long it will be up on their free site. Interesting graphic on how many listeners L.A. station KLSX lost when Howard Stern went to Sirius.

I have to say that Adam's best days were on Loveline or possibly the man show... radio just ain't his gig.

I really tried to listen to the show again and there are so many annoying variables to the listening experience that it makes it damn near impossible. The first, and most obvious, is the incredibly long typical terrestrial radio commercial breaks--10 minutes or so. Well, it's actually about 4 minutes of spots because the Edge couldn't sell an air conditioner in Yuma much less ad time on the Adam Carolla show--the remaining break is spent with continuous reminders and clever liners with funky beds... "The adam Carolla show will be on in 3, 2, 1... (60 seconds of annoying Frostbytes bed and still no show...) That aspect by itself is certainly more than enough to drive away the average listener. Of course there's the content; primarily Adam's show is a mesh of phone callers that drone on forever about painting houses for celebs, chicks who talk about how great Adam is/was and Adam's fascinating anecdotes that go absolutely nowhere about Los Angeles. I hate to break it to you Adam, but there's life outside of LA--this is like Frosty, Heidi and Frank all over again.

What else would one expect from a station who clearly decides to ditch local talent and go the cheap and easy route and run a syndicated show... yuck.

Just a tip to the program director over at the good ship Titanedge--you can play music during the spot breaks if you don't have enough inventory to fill the time. Naturally talk shows on music formatted stations are generally a disaster unless the show is fairly compelling, which this is not. I would love to meet the type of person that actually finds the show entertaining... it's terrible shtick, recycled jokes, endless stories and phone calls that have little purpose and mostly 3rd grade talk.

It's sad, because I think Adam Carolla is talented, I just think that the show is awful and has a horrible cast which doesn't at all fit with Adam's personality. Oh well, the show will be off the air in less than a year-and-a-half just like before (mind you I kind of wonder if the Edge will be on the air that long anyway).

Interesting article but the way it addressed everyone as Mister read like the Reservoir Dogs script - why do I have to be Mister Pink :)

Please, people, quit dissin' on Kevin Mannion. His numbers were ASTRONOMICAL compared to what "fat boy" has accomplished. Clearly, if Jay Z ain't talkin, Mr. "free dinners at Morton's" don't got no f@ckin' expertise. Take the hiring of Colin Boyd: HEY, I THINK WE SHOULD PUT TWO REALLY DRY GUYS IN THE ROOM, AND LET'S FIRE THE CHICK. ANY TAKERS? THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! The notion that Riviera wants to deep six the Edge is mindlessly stupid. The station merely has an over the hill, out of his league manager. And the EDGE is now officially dead. Bank it.
