With The Zone's (or FREE) ratings declining rapidly, I'm hangin' for The EDGE to finally beat them. Both stations are on level terms at the moment & it's won't be long before The EDGE will after all this time get to be THE number 1 rocker in Pheonix!Good onya EDGE, you deserve to be there!!!

or until 103.9 purchases the proven 92.3 format from BonnEmmis and ditches the Edge for Hip hop ::)Seeing as it's what they did to get the EDGE format when 106.3fm went espanol!-30-

That was an owner and General Manager ago. From what I understand, current management is committed to the alt-rock format as long as it makes money and fills a format void.

Alt-rock or an established hip hop?-30-

There contract stated when they bought the edge they had to keep the alt format. It is one of the better programmed alt stations in this country.

I love the EDGE. I discovered it on vacation in Phoenix a few years ago, and listen online frequently. However, it seems that the alt format is going through a rough time rightnow. Its hard to see the station beating out the Sandusky rockers. I hope it can pull it off.

So the big question is..why are the ratings so low? Is it poor signal? They should be going up with KZON's audience.

The 103.9 signal is most powerful in the east Valley, and since their target audience seem to be ASU students and people in their early 20's living/working in the Scottsdale/Tempe area, that shouldn't be a problem. The Edge's promotion strategy functions on a "grass roots" level (meaning, word of mouth from listeners), except for the contest tie-in they have with the local WB TV station. With iPods and satellite radio becoming more widely accepted among the core demographic of alt-rock radio, that might be another factor.

You're kidding, right? That station is terrible. The imaging makes no sense, and it copies other rock stations in Phoenix. That'll really set yourself apart from the other stations! The music selection and scheduling is horrendous. Most of their jocks are good, but there are a couple that are just plain BAD. The Edge isn't one of the BEST programmed stations, it's one of the WORST!

You come to my hometown louisville,ky and listen to wlrs and you will see why i say that.Wlrs is clueless at programming a alt station they make it a alt/active hybrid and fail miserably.

Louisville is market 55, Phoenix is mardet 15. You would think there would be a better alt station in 15. Especially with NO competition. But they play a LOT of active rock, and it's going to drown them. KUPD will never be beat. NEVER. They have too much heritage for a weak signaled alt station to take them down. Now as far as the PD/MD situation at the Edge. Do you even listen to the station? You can't if you think it's well programmed. There are scheduling train wrecks every hour. Not to mention the fact that there are ZERO risk songs on the playlist. They only go by research, and that makes for a pretty crappy station.

I have noticed since they got a new pd they seem to play more active like 10 years and the like so yes you are right in my opinion you are trying to marry active/alt which does not work but in fairness to them i love the all request lunch and the ska punk show and the acoustic show on sundays those are things i think unique in the worl of alt radio i would ad a mashup show personally. You have a vaild point with lou being 55 and phoenix being 15 but i think it goes back to alt should be alt and active should be active no marying the two formats make for a bad mix of music!!!

You like the All 311/Authority Zero/Phunk Junkeez/Jack Johnson Lunch Hour? It's one of the worst lunch hours in the Valley! If you want to listen to a good lunch hour, check out Power. Their "Old Skool Lunch" and in particular "West Coast Wednesdays" is really good. You hear hip hop there that you wont hear any other time. Not like the All Request Lunch where you just hear the same damn thing over and over and over and over...it should be called the All Stoner Hour.Caller: Play whatever you want to, Robin. You're Hot!!!!!Robin: Oh, okay, i'll play something really deep from 311. How about "Amber". Cause you never hear that song anymore!!!!Yeah, that's unique programming.

You made me laugh foofighter very funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!But they do play bitchin camero but seriously how woudl you program the edge keeping the same format.I love indie 1031 in los angeles and 91x in sandiego and 949 in sandiego.go at it playlist and all.

Glad I could make you laugh. That's half the point of these boards, right? If I was programming the Edge I would take it back about 8 or 9 months to when it was still a psuedo-neo station. Get rid of all things acitve (10 years, default, flyleaf, three days grace, et al). KUPD is the king of active, the Edge has always failed when trying to go up against them (remember 99-00?), let them have the active rock. The Edge should be an alternative to KUPD, not KUPD lite.Remember when the Edge had some 20 Nirvana songs in rotation, a bunch of Pixies, the Cure, Social Distortion, Pearl Jam, etc.? That's what got the station above a 2.0 for the first time ever. I don't know why they abondoned that niche format, it seemed to be doing really well for them. I guess the new ownership didn't like having a station on the up-and-up and would rather have a floundering station that will live in the shadow of KUPD forever. Any active that I happened to keep, Rage Against the Machine, System, Tool, would probably be day parted. The Edge won't be successful if they aren't getting in office listeners, and they won't get in office listeners if they keep playing metal during the day. I know a lot of people aren't fans of day parting, but I am. The Circle K crowd wants rock on their alternative station, the 9 to 5 crowd doesn't.The simple answer is that I would program it as if it were actually an alternative station. Active rock is killing alternative all over the place, and Phoenix is not exception.

foofighter i agree 110% in fact i sent an email to kevin the new pd and said in so many words how the edge revamped itseldf in summer of 04 got rid of all the active rock and added some old school bands like the cure and the pixies but since you took over i told him i heard kid rock and three days grace both of which do not belong on an alt station and he respoded in kind saying you are quite the estute listener and he told me since kzon is gone we had to appeal to more a mass audience and get those dissaffected kzon listeners.I disgree if they wanty alt they would go to the edge anyways with or without kid rock or flyleaf(yuk that crap just sucks)So i see what he is saying but do not agree with him.i also said there is a format for that kind of music already edging it get it edging it is not what you should do with that music. But it seems his plan isn't working if you see the latest numbers.I also sent an email to the old pd young mark and he agreed with me.its really to bad they were sold.active rock is ruining alternative radio as i stated before marrying active and alternative i do not think works no matter what market you are in!!!

i think any PD when they take over a station for the first time like to make their mark to some extent. Might not be the best choice, but its there opportunity to put a stamp on things and if ratings go up, then thats what they go for. Both the PD and the Marketing Dir worked for KZON for years but under different management and under different PDs. KZON was at its peak when Mannion was the MD Paul peterson was the PD (of KDKB) back in 98 before Peterson was ushered out a new PD not only came in, but tweaked the format to cover a more Hot AC approach and the burgeoning Latin wave of Ricky Martin and Mark Anthony. I worked there right before, during, and after they did that tweak and honestly the station was never the same as it was when John Holmberg and Stef did mornings. They maye have been losing some listners to Mix back then, but had they stayed the course it would have been great,My point is, Mannion knows what he his doing and he might be operating under some parameters we arent aware of involving programming and ownership agenda. I agree with Gen X getting older it might be wise to add in stuff that was en vogue back in their hey day (late 80s early 90s college radio) but you cant blame him for adding in the Kid Rock and other gold songs from the late 90s early 00s cause those were the songs that worked for him when he was at the Zone.
