THE EDGE

I strongly disagree with you on this one. Amber is extremely annoying to listen to for me. Her
voice is like nails on a chalkboard,( ZEE1004point5TheEDDGGGEEE). Freakin' aweful and absolutely
amateur. College radio would be a great fit for her, not corporate radio. She needs to talk less,
and play more REAL rock. I hate her evening show with the higher doses of MTV wannabe rock bands.
I wish 104 would start playing some real bands with Real talent like Sevendust or Pantera! When
Sevendust came to town awhile back they refused to even play them when I called in on my way
to the show. Even though they were supposedly supporting the concert by announcing and promoting it constantly. What a joke. Thank god for XM!

I agree CrazyOkie, Amber's voice is NOT a broadcaster's voice. In fact, she sounds like one of the Power Puff Girls. Donna Fox has a killer chick voice. Donna would be a great fit for Z104.5's night show - she's got that sexy, raspy thing goin' on with plenty of personality to spare. Amber is probably the only 7PM to 12AM shift that is broadcast live, so that's why her numbers may get a little kiss in the ratings.

Okay, I gotta step up. Amber is my girl. She has been at that station for 10+ years. She is and will be the best damn employees anyone can have. Regardless of what you think of her voice and her performance on air, she is and will be one of the BEST employees you will ever have. PERIOD. Her ratings are incredible and she is just HOT. Leave her alone, the girl rocks.

No one is saying she is a bad employee. They're saying she has an annoying voice on the air. It's like, you know, totally out of place on like a, rock station. Glad to know she's hot. That really backs up your argument well.

Like, ya know, I am just defending Amber. Again, regardless of what you think of her voice, if you listen to her show, she has content and she preps. She has tons of knowledge in her show which says more than alot of shows I have heard. :)

I agree with the post that they need to play more Sevendust and Megadeth. Amber is a hard listen but she seems like a nice person. Amber play more Sevendust and Mudvayne.

Ya more Mudvayne!! :) Amber and I actally interviewed Chad when HellYeah was in town. You can hear the interview at MySpace.com/TheMetalShop Enjoy! :)

So... you called XM and they played Sevendust for you? Somehow I doubt it.

Not unlikely. XM is often very good with requests. How many terrestrial stations are?

They may be, I don't have XM, so I don't have the experience with them.
However, there is a reason many terrestrial stations don't play requests. Because it will kill your share. If you played every request that came in, you would be playing to nobody but your P1s. The people that call the radio station represent, on average, about 1% of your listening audience. If you play a request, you're playing a song that, very likely, only the person who requested it wants to hear.

Yeah I quickly learned that lesson that stations usually don't play your requests.

Way back in the day, the 50's through 80's, listener requests played a huge part in determining local chart action and thus, national chart position. You would see Perry Como and Elvis on the same chart, or maybe The Beatles & Otis Redding on the same chart, and so on through the halcyon years of radio. That's what this business used to be about until mulitmedia corporations starting eating up local stations and Soundscan became the be-all, end-all in determing the Top 100 in Billboard. Formats are so completely fragmented now days and musically speaking, the various formats have been stuck in a rut for years. All of the artists The Edge-type format plays sound alike and that format's music has remained frozen in 1991 or so, since the appearance of Nirvana and bands from the grunge era. R & B has been stuck in the Hip Hop rut since the late 1980's and Country has been off in the "new country" ditch since the mid-1990s days of Garth Brooks. New country sounds like lame 80's rock or 90's contemporary Christian schlock with the occassional fiddle or steel guitar part added in the mix. I guess the old saying "feed a prisoner rotten meat long enough and he'll begin to acquire a taste for rotten meat" is, sadly, true.

THANK YOU! - i agree with this post..... I interviewed Henry Rollins one time face to face & he told me this. "there is great music in every single genre, just as there is bad music in every genre, it's up to you to decide for yourself what you like".....

Requests aren't always a vanity issue of one person. I've found in a lot of engaging in conversation with people about the stations I program, if you get someone complaining about something - you'll get them calling - and maybe out of 5 complainers, they may all crank call you. But you play songs people like and maybe only 1 person will call for every ten enjoying it. Because frankly, a lot of people are content with what we do and the music we play. It's up to your judgement and knowledge of your audience to determine what that request means - but if someone cares enough to call and ask for something, I'm going to seriously look at it. It's a matter of respecting the listeners and knowing what works for you.

I moved back out here from Arizona where I was a jock for a well known Phoenix rock station for seven years.
We played many of the bands most stations here would never play and our ratings rocked. We had a very
loyal diehard following in the community. I don't hear much creativity on the radio out here. Promotions, music or otherwise. The playlists and personalities on most of the rock stations here reflect this well. Someone mentioned earlier about XM not playing any requests. They do play requests, often! I would like to hear bands like Sevendust, Mudvayne, Slipknot, S.O.A.D., Faith No More, Pantera, Nonpoint, Killswitch Engage, Korn, C.O.C, Lamb of God, etc. Is it gonna happen? No, not in Tulsa. At least not anytime soon. But I can at least dream about it.

There's one key distinction:
KUPD=Active Rock
KMYZ=Alternative

You don't generally hear much of the bands you listed on Alternative stations. Exceptions are System, Faith No More (but usually only "Epic"), and Korn. Maybe a little Mudvayne and Slipknot at night, if the Alt. station leans active. The best bet for stuff like that in Tulsa is KMOD. The CC station in my market plays a little of that stuff occasionally, but their playlist much heavier on new rock than KMOD.

I agree, but I think The Edge's ratings could greatly improve with an active leaning format. At KUPD we did
very well with that formula. But we also interacted with the community and our listeners much more. Which
I think added to our appeal. I'm just adding my suggestions. I would like to see them do better, and I feel
they can with a few minor adjustments.
