The Emmy Awards to air on Fox in September

The Television Academy and Fox Entertainment today jointly announced that the 75th Emmy Awards are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 18, live coast to coast.

The ceremony will air from 8-11 pm ET and 5-8:00 pm PT on FOX.

A week prior to the Emmy Awards telecast, the 2023 Creative Arts Emmy Awards will take place over two consecutive nights on Saturday, Sept. 9 and Sunday, Sept. 10. An edited presentation will be telecast on FXX at a later date.

Nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards will be announced Wednesday, July 12.

To celebrate the Emmys’ 75 annioversary the Television Academy has created a new set of key art “capturing the history, stature and honor of television’s most prestigious award.” The art deco-inspired design showcases the anniversary and illuminates the elegance of Emmy. See an example above.

Fox first aired the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20, 1987, hosted by Bruce Willis, a little over 5 months after they launched primetime programming. 14.38 million viewers watched that broadcast, down from 35.79 million viewers from the previous years NBC broadcast.

Although most Primetime Emmy ceremonies in recent years had been held on Sunday night, note that this year's ceremony is on a Monday so it doesn't conflict with "NFL Sunday Night Football" on NBC, which has been the most popular prime-time series on television for the past few years.

But it will go up against a Monday night NFL game on ESPN. Usually, ESPN's Monday night game draws more viewers than any competing program in it's time period, broadcast or cable.

Maybe the Television Academy should have scheduled the Primetime Emmy ceremony for a Tuesday night. This way, it won't lose big to the NFL (as I think the ESPN NFL game on Monday, September 18th could draw far more viewers than the Primetime Emmys).
