The end of 106.1 RDU - one year later

We are now at the one-year anniversary of yet another station's demise: One year ago this week, on the heels of Oldies 93's metamorphosis to The Wolf in the Triad, legendary classic rocker 106.1 WRDU went country and became The Rooster. (And yes, both 106.1 and its classic-rock "replacement" on 100.7 are still a mess.) The year since then would see WDUR/WTSB's "official" death, CC complete its Smoketree makeover with Sunny 93.9 becoming 93.9 Kiss FM, and WCMC-FM fall off the country bandwagon leading up to its yet-to-be-launched sports format. Any thoughts?

A couple of happy thoughts...Jack Boston (680-WPTF) and Bob Dumas (G-105) both survived bouts with Cancer. I wish these gentlemen continued good health. If you look at it from this perspective, is it really that important WRDU is now "The Rooster"?

sorry berlin, I did not mean to go away from your thread.

Haven't heard anything new on Jack Boston, but Bob and his Showgram cronies seem to be up to their crazy tricks again (i.e. squirting one another in the eye with lemon juice)--- and did you hear about their latest stunt where they sawed Randi West's desk in half with a chainsaw?

Sorry berlin,
I am not a fan of Bob Dumas (although I wish him EXTREMELY GOOD HEALTH) or the "Showgram", I think they are immature and childish. Do you remember about a year after 9/11, a rather heavy guy (I do not know his name)who worked on the "Showgram" ran onto an airplane at RDU? (It was a stunt). I think the airplane had to wait three hours before leaving. The "Showgram" was suspended, the FAA was planning on filing charges. That should have been the end of the "Showgram".

I remember moving to Raleigh in 1991. I knew the local oldies station (WTRG) was good, along with the smooth Jazz outlet, WNND. But I figured rock would be a wasteland. How wrong I was! 'RDU and 'ZZU (first incarnation on 93.9 Burlington) both pumped out some kick ass rock! I left Raleigh in 1996, but I always figured WRDU would be forever. Guess I was wrong.

Bob Dumas & The Showgram are responsible for about 75% of G105's 12 million annual revenue. Dumas isn't "expendable.

Like sniff I miss the old RDU, but I miss the station Don refers to. 1989-1993 were the great years for that station. Big jocks, promotions and great music. The last few years of its life the station just sucked and it is better off gone.

BTW VODood, I hear G's sales are well below $10,000,000 these days and that 94.7 is somewhere around $15,000,000. Lots of changes in the last four or five years.

VODoo,

Ah, my friend, Mr. Dumas is very expendable! Proof??... One name.... Don Imus ;)

Imus is back Dec 1st on WABC. AND he's a few million richer getting paid out by CBS. Imus is the winner in the end.

IMO he should've never been let go.

My opinion too.

I should mention that I listen to a Charlotte station at 106.1 and one day I heard the Rooster play Johnny Cash. This is good news. At least it's not the same old junk.

Normally I don't get interference from the Raleigh area. The Boone area, on the other hand ...

It is true, Mr. Imus is much wealthier from the experience. There is still the embarrassment of having your trial in the media.

It's very interesting according to Corey Deitz ("The Cash Cage") "Radio is a buisness which actually pays you for NOT working" ::)

It is also my opinion, he should not have been fired.

And, if I had them, I'd bet his millions that Imus never shows up on an FM CHR. Don't think Dumas has to worry about that.

I think Dumas would do a great job at FM talk.

I still miss RDU. It's still the saddest thing I can remember in Raleigh radio.
