The End of an Era...

Ya know, despite some rough times after that, she had some pretty good years, financially, from the mid-80's till about 1995 or so.

Those last three years downtown were really tough.

There were times I really thought things were going to be fine and then we would hit a nose dive. Each time, it got just a little harder to pull it out of that dive.

By the time late 1998 came about, I think we were all ready to throw in the towel. I didn't want too, but we really had no choice.

Monty,

If it was so tough back in the last several years in downtown Conway; how, do you think Mike made it?

I know we had some bad months; but, usually it wasn't losing propositions. Also, I know KTOD had an AM and FM to work against you guys. But, the reputation that KCON had; was much better than Mike's.

I would love to know the answer to that....heck, we would all love to know the answer to that.
It was rummored several times that he had a relative that was backing him, but I never knew for sure.

Despite the reputation, it doesn't pay the bills.

Monty,

Yeah, his late mother was the primary backer behind Mike. She was a classy lady. But, his sister from around Batesville also had a (silent) hand in it.

However, since his mother passed away; he's pretty much on his own & the paycheck of his wife (who teaches).

But, from what I know of Mike; if there is something that needs paid... he will figure out a way to sell ads and collect up front. I know I was taught that from him.

Anyhow, as they say... you learn from all of the good and bad of owners that you work for and put together your very own plan from that learning curve or paying dues.

I have to say, you have done well for yourself. I have offered to buy Mike out on several occasions; but, to no avail. I have told him whenever he was ready to contact me.

I would love to comeback home and be able to run "a / some" stations. It's a goal that I would like to realize someday as well.
