The end of an era

How long are talk shows hosts able to work before the old vocal cords give out? Larry king comes to mind but he retired because of health reasons? BC clams he is in good health so why not give it a few more years if he still loves his job and his vocal cords are working good. He has had the
privilege of broadcasting from Florida during the winter months for the last ten years, one of the things he said he looks froward to in his retirement,
going to Florida. Now, if he wasn't able to broadcast from Florida during the Winter, maybe he would have decided to retire ten years earlier. So, on the flip side, maybe we(BC fans) should be grateful CC Columbus allowed him to broadcast from his Florida home during the Winter months. The audio
from his Flordia home was not anywhere as good as from the WTVN studio. I personally did not like the audio from his Florida home studio.

So who will be BC's successor?

Clearly not Joel Riley.  I have a feeling Woody from WCOL is the likely front runner  Or, less likely, Dave Kaelin?

Woody hinted he is not interested in taking over BCs show, at least not yet. He could always change his mind, I guess. ;)

Woody did the afternoon news show on News Talk WOAI in San Antonio in the late 90s to 2000, before accepting the job at WCOL-FM. I listened to WOAI before I moved to Columbus.
Woody did an awesome job on WOAI back then and I was very impressed with his show. So, yes, Woody would be the frontrunner
for BCs replacement, if he wants the gig.

Speaking of Woody, he was on the old RIVER FM 98.7 back in the early 90s. So, when WCOL came calling, he was at CCs WOAI and he couldn't wait to get back to Columbus, according to old newspaper articles. He may be more comfortable doing
music radio then news talk radio.

Yeah Woody was at 98.9 back in it's country days!

At the end of his last show this morning, BC reminded Joel Riley there will never be another
Bob Conners. His advice to Joel, " Just be Joel Riley" to which Joel replied, "I could be just
half as good as you are BC and my rating still wouldn't be good enough to keep doing the morning show on WTVN. It appears Joel Riley doesn't think he will get the permanent gig.

I think CC will offer the job to Woody but he may not accept it.

I am not originally from Columbus so I need some help.

I know BC did radio in Columbus for a long time but anytime I tried to listen too him he always sounded like someone had just taken a dump in his corn flakes...that is my perception...so please tell me, what is it (other than his longevity) that his endeared BC too you? :-\

BC had a sarcastic streak in him which may be what you heard bubbling under the surface. On air he seemed to get along just fine with his co-workers and most of his guests.

There were times when he was a little off his game, but for me they were so few and far between that I cannot recall the last time I had that thought.

There is an aircheck of Bob from his days in Pittsburg. He worked FT for WEEP and did a weekend gig at KQV using the air name Don Howard. You can hear the aircheck here. http://user.pa.net/~ejjeff/carlson.html You'll have to scroll down to the link.

As for the "Florida Secret", I believe Business First ran an article several years ago about his Florida winters. I think it was an article featuring a renewed contract.

Here's a link to a 2000 article in the Dispatch revealing the Florida hook up. http://infoweb.newsbank.com.webprox...id=10DCF30CC8AFC528&p_docnum=6&p_queryname=10

Dec 23, 2000

Every year Bob Conners clusters his vacation days and takes a long winter hiatus in Florida ; and every year his faithful WTVN (610 AM) morning-show listeners go through withdrawal pangs over the morning monarch's absence.

This year Conners ' Florida trip will be as long as usual, but it may not seem like it to listeners.

That's because, for the first time, a digital hookup will allow Conners to broadcast from his vacation quarters in the sunny climes. After taking next week off, Conners will be back on the air Jan. 3.

Bob Conners still didn't mention he Broadcasted his show from Marco Island in the Wintertime. He has now admitted on the air yesterday and to the local weekly neighborhood newspaper his Winter home on Marco Island.

I still think the reason he didn't retire earlier is because CC allowed him to broadcast his show from Florida as from the the Winter of 1999.
It doesn't appear his listeners nor CC Columbus could stand him being off the air for four months during the Wintertime. So, CC Columbus gave
BC the opportunity to broadcast from his Winter home on Marco Island an incentive not retire ten to fifteen years earlier. A win win situation for both CC Columbus and BC somehow.

Eastmoor will remain home for local radio icon Conners

When Bob Conners steps down on Nov. 30 from the radio show he’s hosted for 33 years, he says he will stick around his Eastmoor neighborhood.

Conners has lived in Eastmoor for nearly as long as he’s hosted Bob Conners in the Morning for WTVN (610 AM).

“I have no plans to make Florida my permanent home,” Conners said, referring to the winter home he owns on Marco Island. “I’ve been told that come April on the island, it gets unbearably hot and humid, like Columbus in August. So, no, I’ll keep the arrangement I have already, living in Florida during the winter and in Columbus for the rest of the year.”

Why do people give a rats behind WHERE BC did his broadcasts from? He did them well, and that is what counted. It never mattered to me if he did it from Florida or not.

Time to end the complaining about it.

I'm not sure if people were concerned with where he broadcast from but the facade that he was here. And because of technology, it came off pretty well.

I am a radio romantic. I remember back to the days when daily daily hosts still hosted Christmas broadcasting. I don't remember when it ended, but I do remember Bob working one Christmas morning when he was at WBNS. It wasn't that long ago that Steve Cannon was talking about what people got on Christmas day when the music ended in the evening. The connection of having hosts here, whether right or wrong, while not a deal breaker seemed to make the connection stronger.

Through the years, formatically WTVN has really tightened up. When Bob first came, there was a play list. Bob was almost free to allow his personality to shine through. On his last day, if you watch the video on the web site, you can see it's primarily plug and play.

A final note. Did Bob ever say thank you Columbus and goodbye?

Agreed. People in Miami didn't care that talk legend Neil "God" Rogers did his show from Ontario, Canada for much of his last decade on the air. He was still deeply revered, and VERY highly-rated.

Found the post below on Bob Conners which includes a photo of BC from his early days in radio at WYRE in Pittsburgh, Pa. Then found this 1962 Billboard piece which mentions he started this Country and Western show on WYRE in 1962:

Was WYRE BC's first job in radio?

Gone With the Wind

"With a final playing of Wooly Bully, WTVN morning host took of the headsets for the last time as a Columbus Radio host on November 30, 2011."

"On October 24, 2011 at 7:45 in the morning, Bob Conners both shocked and gave the probably long expected news that he would be retiring and his last day on the air would be November 30th. In almost 47 years behind a Columbus microphone, Bob grew with Columbus. And he leave behind many great memories."

God I hope so. Joel is an okay DJ, but the morning show is not his forte. After 8 days of Joel, I really, really miss Bob.

Long shot here, but I've got to wonder if Shawn Ireland is in the morning mix somehow.

oh god i hope not

She said a few times on Facebook she has a major announcement coming soon. Since we are nearing the first of the year and the typical times for format/personality changes, I thought I'd throw it out there.

On a different topic, I wonder what ever became of the lady who was the perfect partner with BC when he was at BNS? WRFD used her as a sort of circus act for a short period of time and then she faded away.

She's doing a show on WINK-FM, so maybe that's the big announcement?
