The End of Soul 73

http://www.soul730.com/

Effective January 1, 2013
Soul 730 KKDA is no longer broadcasting on the radio.
The frequency has been sold to another company.
We thank you for listening and for all of your support.

This sale is final, and cannot be changed, but if you would still like to leave a comment, you can do so at (972) 647-5090

Do we know what replaced Soul 73 KKDA-AM? Who bought the station?

I saw this yesterday. Looks like the buyer is a group named SKR Partners run by Kimberly Roberts and Scott Kim (maybe that is what the "SK" stands for?). It doesn't appear they currently own any other stations. The purchase price according to the FCC filing was 1.9 million.

I am in shock and sickened at the same time. On the flip side, this is a golden opportunity for another AM to take up the slack...

Well Buc, I don't think that is going to happen. I don't think there is any value in the demo that KKDA used to appeal to.

So where is UTA Basketball going to end up on now?

Likewise...when I moved to Dallas, KKDA quickly became one of my favorite stations, especially Cuzzin' Lennie and The Wolf. Thankfully, I still have my red on white Soul 73 t-shirt to allow me to remember the good times and great listening it provided.

I agree fellas. I just hope that this station doesn't keep the KKDA calls. I would be pissed to see that!

Is there not an FCC policy that stations with shred. Callsigns and ownership have to have the call changed when one of the stations is sold?

That used to be the policy. Not anymore.

In the NYC market, Park Communications sold WPAT AM and FM to separate buyers. WPAT is now owned by Multicultural Broadcasting, WPAT-FM is owned by SBS. They both kept their call letters.

But my guess is Korean broadcasters will want new call letters to reflect the new format since KKDA is so associated with the African-American community.

According to the APA, Service retains the rights for call sign KKDA among other intelectual property. The call sign for 730 will be changing.

Case in point about call letters splitting up: WDAY(AM) and WDAY-FM in Fargo, North Dakota. Different owners for well over a decade now...

So is Service taking the station online only? Is that why Soul 730.com was set up?

Not streaming. At least no plans to. The website has been in place for a while, not something new.

No they were streaming since late August. I was listening to them everyday. The website came about at least 1-2 weeks before the stream started. Both FM's had websites and KKDA did not.

Wonder if the KKDA-AM format could wind up via leased time on another AM? Here in Houston, the longtime African-American targeted KCOH is being sold (to Guadaloupe Radio Network, which has KATH in DFW) but the programming is moving over to a Liberman owned basket-case AM.

Best memory of KKDA 730 is from the early 70's, when they ran the impressive "Lift Every Voice And Sing"/"I Am Somebody" signoff.

So is Willis "The Crooner" "Where is the Party" Johnson out on his duff? That strikes a sad blow to the black community and his legions of listeners. I know no one's immune to the effects of this modern-day idiocy known as radio, but you won't find a voice on any North Texas station that's more committed to his listeners than Mr Johnson.

I'm sure $1.9 mil is a decent price in this day and age, but is this an indication that the aging Hyman Childs is slowly selling off all his radio properties?
