The End of Soul 73

Here's the weird thing for me. I have listened to the station off and on for years. For whatever reason I had taken an interest in listening on my drive to work just a few weeks ago. I marveled at how good a little 500 watt station could sound at night with music. When I tuned in the other morning and heard the foreign language stuff I just couldn't imagine that it was a format change or sale of the station. Not Soul 73! But it was. So very surprised and sad.

Buc, I think that someone knew that Hyman was putting the station up for sale, but they were told to keep quiet about it. Somebody knew.

This was not a "well kept secrect"... I knew it was for sale months ago. The asking price was $2 Million...As I understand it, it sold for $1.9 Million. That's a steep price for a low wattage AM in a market the size of DFW. There are several other local AM's for sale at this time with a much better wattage and pattern than 730 AM. If one of these groups really has the funding, they should buy one of them and put the community service programming from KKDA AM on it.

The thing about this sale that is interesting to me is that the only way I would think that AM is worth $1.9 Million would be to KEEP the local community programming on it - that had a lot of value...dumping it makes that frequency less valuable in my opinion...but they certainly didn't ask me!

I do think there is a place in the market for a heavy local urban community oriented station on one of the fledgling AM frequencies. The problem is most of them are overpriced. It would take some deep pockets to support an upstart such as that until revenue supported it. Not impossible, just improbable.

Since it's now a Korean station, will they just call it "Seoul 73"..?

Maybe a black company tried to buy it, but did not have the working capital to fund operations for more than a couple of months. Who knows, it's over and done with now.

Now that's true...

Mr. Eberhart what website shows which radio stations are for sale?

I'm not aware of a website per se that indicates what stations are for sale.
If you are interested in pursuing ownership, sign up with a broker. When stations that meet your criteria, they will contact you and make you aware of it.

The allure of ownership is a curiousity thing for most. For those who make it a reality, it must be an obsession and passion.

Thank you Mr. Eberhart.

I had ran into this article today on The Dallas Weekly. I think they gave a few more details on what happened at Soul 73

For someone reportedly woth more than 100 Million, what was the necessity of selling off KKDA???

The reference to Hymen's worth is here in this D Magazine article from 2003:

http://www.dmagazine.com/Home/2003/08/01/Pulse.aspx

Hyman may have been worth $100 Mil back in '03, but that was predicated on his equity in K104, which may have been worth nearly that much back then. Now, after the crash in station prices and with substantially lower ratings and revenue, the station is worth less than half what it was.
