the end of stereo on WLYN-AM

For those who follow such things:
WLYN will not return to AM stereo broadcasting. We switched over to a
new transmitter several months ago, and did not transfer over the stereo generator.
The old BE transmitter will become a back-up, the new BE transmitter will be in daily use, but
in mono L+R, only.

We still have a pair of 15K telco loops to get the WLYN audio from thew Woburn studios to Lynn.
One circuit will become the primary one, the other will be a back-up. As most of our programs
now come from remote locations (either telco loops or internet streams), a large part of our
program schedule would be in mono anyway. The only true AM stereo was from programs originating in our
studios. (maybe 25% of the total time)

Despite the fact that WLYN is no longer stereo, the audio sounds especially good these days. Check it out!
Thanks to station engineer Grady Moates. You da man!

That leaves WJIB 740 the sole analog AM stereo left in the market.

And, it sounds great on a wideband AM stereo receiver in a clean reception area!

Just FYI, the overall penetration is still quite low...but so far a hallmark of several of the new HD Radios is that they do pick up C QUAM AM stereo. Unfortunately, they DON'T do anything wideband...sounds like it's limited to about 5kHz bandwidth. That's not surprising; running IBOC on AM requires that the AM narrow its analog signal to 5kHz anyways. Still, I've found that listening to WJIB on my HD Radio is more pleasant fidelity-wise than most of the other analog-only stations.

So if you gave up on AM Stereo because there aren't receivers out there to get it...please reconsider! :'(

------------

Speaking of HD Radio, for all its flaws, I have to say one thing that I really like about it is how consistent the reception quality is now. The usual fades, pops, clicks, static, etc? All gone. Just plain gone. I don't really notice it until it goes away when the HD signal gets a bit too low and it blends back to analog and all that static/pops come back. Then I *REALLY* notice it. :)

I'm finding on the Sangean HDT-1 that some stations occasionally drop in and out to analog even though I'm getting a strong signal. Some of the HD-2 channels cut in and out fairly often, and I'm just a few miles from the Pru, using an indoor "rabbit ear" antenna. The AM stereo on WJIB keeps cutting in and out to mono also, even on their daytime power. Could I have a defective Sangean?
