The End Playlists & the McCart Firing

Greetings -

Its been a while since I've started a topic here.

A thread or two down is the link to Matt McCart's blog on how he managed to get himself canned from The End. It was actually a pretty good read.

My real questions are, where does The End want to go? And, to the industry pros out there, what is their target demo?

With the threat of KRock, they did the Classic Alternative thing. I, an early-twentysomething, had, before that, been totally turned off to the end, a station I grew up with. The firing of Bill Reid was the last straw. The Classic Alternative sucked me back in. I liked the old Alternative that I grew up with, mixed in with new music that was actually getting good again. It was great. But, following the 12+ ratings on Radio and Records, it was apparent that this wasn't working out for them

With the demise of KROCK, the End has indeed (as McCart pointed out) gone back to playing a lot of new music, basically, all the time. It is Wheezer overload on that station. Even last night, a friend of mine who loved the Classic Alternative sound and doesn't follow radio closely pointed out to me that the End seemed to be regressing to their "New Rock First" medocrity. And, as far as the Fall Out Boy single that McCart hated so much, I find it an okay song right now, but I think it'll really grate on me after I hear it about five more times. The fact that that CD came out six months ago and the End is plugging it as "New Music" is pretty lame. The single thing I really like right now on the End is the emphasis on playing lots and lots of stuff from the EndSessions archives, most of which is really great.

I know that radio stations are always transforming into some other "thing" that will get the big ratings and bill the big money. I don't have any problem with that. Gotta make money to stay on the air. But its become so hard to figure out what some of these stations are aiming for. The End went after us twenty somethings (I think) with the Classic Alternative, and after, what, a year, have gone back to chasing the 14 year olds with daddy's credit cards.

Oh, and unlike Belle, I hated Marconi.
And no, I didn't think Savage was "Friggin' Awesome" either. He was past his prime.

Comments from those on the "inside"?
