I think Stern was a big mistake for 103X. This market can't handle him, even now. That probably gave them a negative reputation. I'm not a fan of him, but I don't really take offense at what he says because I simply don't listen. Then again, I despise morning shows with a lot of talk (especially John Boy and Billy).awp69 said:Forgot about Stern. I do remember there being a bit of an uproar about him coming here and I think I remember them taking him off the air even before they started their demise. I was never a big Stern fan myself, but did like having an alternative rocker around here.
I used to think 99X was great, but Radio 104.5 has kind of taken the cake as far as my favorite alt. rock station. But as you mention even though Rock 93.5 may not be the best of the best, I'd still take it any day over The Planet. Of course, that's not saying much.
I still don't understand how a market like Columbia can sustain an Alternative rocker like WARQ (no active), but Greenville has to have an Active rocker (and no alternative). What makes the markets' demographics so different? I know Columbia has USC, but other than that, I'd think the GSP market has much more favorable demographics for Alternative than Columbia. Seems like it should be the other way around.
Radio 104.5 in Philadelphia is doing well, especially in several demographics, even 35-64 and females - I think it's far exceeded Clear Channel's expectations. It's very well programmed to appeal to a wide demographic. The presentation (or, lack thereof), is fantastic.
