The ever-evolving KMCQ

Dusty Dale - I agree with you totally - very well put. That explains why there are so many Meatloaf songs that are being played that are unknown to me. Did not know he was a demigod. I know his hit "Two out of three ain't bad." I was having a bad moment a few days ago, turned on KMCQ and there he was again on some song foreign to me and very irritating. At the time, I was hoping to hear "Walk Away Renee" or some soothing song from my youth. I turned off the radio and put on a CD.

KMCQ plays a lot of gems and often long stretches of them, but for my demo (a kid in the 60's) they are not nearly as listenable as they were at the beginning. Again, there are so many wonderful songs they could play from the 60's and 70's. I think their strength has always been being able to play a deep library since they were non-commercial for so long. Most oldies stations play, 200? or so songs in rotation? Finally KMCQ came along a few years ago and didn't play Barbara Ann and The Lion Sleeps Tonight every few hours. I am so happy every time I hear songs like "Wishing on a Star" or "Hurt So Bad" or anything by Seals and Crofts wafting out of my little kitchen radio. I also loved rediscovering Al Stewart through KMCQ.

I have no idea who is choosing the music, but for this demo they need to REALLY know and have a genuine feel for the music and how to put it together. Someone actually in the demo would have the edge. Look at Ted Alexander - he knows and loves his oldies and has been playing them throughout his long radio career. His show is very well prepped and programmed. I suspect he has added more 80's songs lately due to the request of those running KMCQ. No station is ever going to play every song we love, but for my demo, KMCQ came close for a very long time. I'd hate to see that slip away, because no one else in Seattle plays those long, lost songs.

WCBS-FM in New York and K-Earth in L.A. are two of the most amazing sounding radio stations on this planet...they are fun to listen to, they have personality plus and play great music, what's NOT to like! I love both of 'em! Wait til internet radio is available in most cars....then I will be listening to those two ALOT.

I usually listen to KMCQ when I'm in the area and always enjoy it. If you like KMCQ you might really enjoy the new online incarnation of KISN in Portland. It has a deep playlist like KMCQ, and has the original station jingles, plus other good oldies imaging. Check 'em out at www.goodguyradio.com.

If you could replicate the KISN web-cast within the Seattle market, which "heritage" station would you bring back?

I loved the old "Thee FM---KVI." In the mid-70's great for listening. That was a great sounding radio station. AND way back then KVI-AM with the full personality and fun WAS also a great station. Just my two faves from way back when.

I'll tell you a station that was good was KGW in the 1970s. Great personalities and very classy presentation.

I loved it.

I couldn't wait for KGDN to sign off so I could hear KGW and KFI.

Ahhh....Memories......

The little station that could is now promoting itself. I'm sure it's trade but KMCQ is now on the backs of Shuttle Express vans.

It probably is because i've heard Shuttle Express ads on the station once or twice. Also, i've heard them on in The Little Holland Drive In here in Tacoma the last time I went there for lunch(which was a couple months ago) so they're getting played in quite a few buisnesses as well I would imagine.

Interesting choice. I would go for some of the older AM stations myself as well; KJR, KOL, KING, heck even KTAC in Tacoma.

Either one of those or maybe the original KNBQ FM in Tacoma; now that sounded like a great radio station. And all this is coming from someone who's 27 years old(I do admit it and i'm not ashamed of this either) and loves the music and radio stations of the past.

A little while ago I would have said KLSY, and I still think that was a great radio station, but KZAL, the little station out of Wenachee, does a good job with the AC format, really fills in the hole where so many good AC stations once were. KMGL is also good, and better on the personalities, but not quite as good on music.

KMCQ's Facebook page suggests new audio transmitter or whatever it's called to make their station not sound like it's AM. Additionally they've been asking their listeners which songs they would like to hear and which ones they don't. Also like the CD feature they do at midnight with no commercials.

They're also giving away Spring Fair tickets in Puyallup (I think it's Puyallup) with the periodical "be the 10th caller" spot showing up.

I know this board can't go 5 posts without a complaint that a song from 1980 played but I do think KMCQ is making a concerted effort to keep their listeners (self-included) happy for as long as they're around.

Yes, I do think the complaining on this board is quite excessive when it comes to the 80s music on oldies stations. Evidence of this is just a couple threads down, why the heck has there been so many complaints about Cocomo over the past 6 months or so? The one thing that gets me is that sometimes, especially during the 80s lunch on KPLZ and before KJR relaunched, the playlists would sound pretty similar. Excuse me, a hot AC and a classic hits having more than a little overlap? I wouldn't expect to have any overlap in 2012. Yes the oldies were about 14 years old back in the 80s, but now there is so much more music out there, and radio shouldn't just stick to the about 2000 songs it has played for years and go a little deeper.

In the last 10 minutes on KMCQ I heard a commercial featuring Ted Alexander promoting his show, buying the music heard on KMCQ at local record stores, Record Store Day and Silver Platters in Seattle. Right on Ted, KMCQ and Silver Platters! Oh, and in that 10 minute window, KMCQ also played That Kind Of Woman by Merrilee Rush, the icing on the cake! ;D

Yes, I've been hearing some Merrilee on the station beyond the one song that everyone else plays. Northwest stuff that other stations won't touch from the Sonics, Wailers, etc.

some nice oldies programming!! so what is the reason this station has no live/voice track air talent yet? perhaps the potential advertiser can have a say here ie: "sure i'm interested in advertising my company on KMCQ, but until we hear a voice, i aint interested". seriously, how much is a quality voice tracker, like jjh? its time for them to step up to the plate and make some #'s! where are you proactive northwest business advertiser radio fan$?

I would LOVE to voice-trakk for KMCQ in a heartbeat. I do stay busy with my production company, but MISS being on the air....and I know Seattle like the back of my hand and would be such a great addition.....a consummate pro that knows and loves the business. IF the folks at KMCQ read this board---gimme a ring 509-465-1850. I am VERY affordable.......waiting for my phone to ring......

I've listened to KMCQ online. It has a nice sound and a good selection of oldies. I also noticed they have extremely low ratings, not even visible in March. Can it successfully compete in the Seattle market? Is KMCQ in its current format sustainable? How's their ad revenue?

Queen Cities deserves credit for trying to make this format work. It seem they're facing an uphill battle. :)
