The ever-evolving KMCQ

I wonder why they kept going off? It seemed like they were out on every storm that came through the region until they moved. Any idea why? It makes sense that if they were running off of a generator, that they would have to shut down every few hours to refuel the generator, which might not have been possible during one snow storm, but why just a dead carrier?

Heh, KJR played Space Oddity for the first time I can recall as well as Renegade by Styx, which they hardly if ever play.

Anyone been hearing a very very old sounding Don Wilson do ads for some company in Seattle on KMCQ lately? Looks like they also put up a spot for advertising with them, too.

Do you think that KMCQ's playlist is influencing what KJR plays? Or is Clear Channel that rigid in what it allows on the air?
Thanks

KJR is very far ahead of KMCQ in what matters, which is the ratings, so it's probably just Clear Channel. They shouldn't be concerned that their playlist never reaches beyond 50 different songs in a day. But if so, it's a drastic change from 10 years ago. I lived in Vegas for 6 years and KQOL 93.1 was really varied in the type of music they played up until I left and they promptly became the equivalent of Movin 92.5.

I don't know what KJR is other than their bombardment of Bob Rivers and the Fab 4 at Four.

I heard that Don Wilson spot for the first time this afternoon. It's for selling your gold. Perhaps the same company as Fitz in the Morning was doing?

KMCQ has been promoting the screenings of the Documentary "The Wrecking Crew" at the EMP JBL Theater and in Tacoma at the Grand Cinema. Co-sponsoring is Silver Platters, the best record stores in the Seattle area. Right on! I can't wait to see the film.

I've heard the promotions for the Wrecking Crew event. On Sunday afternoon KMCQ featured a half hour interview with Ted Alexander and Danny Tedesco who put the film together. I'm going to see the film tomorrow at EMP.

I am usually singing the praises of KMCQ here, however I need to be critical. I get the feeling that someone at the station is programming to their personal music taste. They play way too much Grateful Dead, Kinks, The Band, SPRINGSTEEN and Little Feat. The worst offense is that they play tracks from Little Feat's Join The Band album from 2008! I have also noticed that they've been playing a lot of the same records over and over everyday. They used to feature a deeper play list. You could go a few days without hearing a repeated record. Don't get me wrong, KMCQ is still a great station, I just hope they don't ruin it by trying to become a KZOK or even worse, a KJR FM.

I was drawn into KMCQ for the simple fact that they played a broad swath of the "pop" music many of us grew up with - tunes and artists that haven't been aired for years on the so-called "classic hits" formats (and fewer of the overworn songs). However, often now when I tune it, I'm getting harder edged "jam band' stuff, and less of the sweeter stuff I am craving. If I wanted to "rock out" there are plenty of other stations for that. If I want some "Afternoon Delight" or "Saturday Night Fever," there aren't really a lot of places for that on the local dial, and none that have segued the music as well as KMCQ. But it's getting squeezed out on my occasional tune-ins by the heavy stuff now. I'd rather they steer more towards early R&B. Maybe play some of the original verson of '60s pop hits before the white artists covered them, if they want something a little less fluffy to add into the mix.

I do notice a lot of Little Feat, never one of my favorite bands, but I haven't heard much Kinks on the station - and that's one band I can never get enough of! The Band? I don't hear them at all.

Funny, don't hear much Little Feat but do hear Kinks. Songs like Village Preservation Society, Shangri-la and Well Respected Man. Have heard The Band.

My god they play way too much Springsteen. And Springsteen's early stuff that wasn't "Hungry Heart" is pure garbage.

Also are playing a couple of Janis Joplin songs that never even charted.

Really like the Midnight Special CD feature though. Beach Boys tonight.

KMCQ is on at work so I hear it for several hours a day and have never heard "Hungry Heart" but have heard Springsteen early stuff. Have only heard a few Janis Joplin.

They do play a lot of Springsteen and they don't seem to care about the criticism about it either. Like I said, I think someone is programming that station to their own personal taste. Whoever is doing that is rapidly spoiling the station. I heard a screechy, long winded track from Janis Joplin yesterday. Certainly never a hit. They also feature more Meat Loaf than the Old Country Buffet! There are so many wonderful records from the 1960s and 1970s that they don't play, why must we hear tracks like Shangri-La by the Kinks so often? They need to drop the album rock and get over their infatuation with Springsteen. On the positive side, I do love the American Top 40 the 70s on Sundays and The 10,000 Oldies show with Ted Alexander (though I wish he would stay out of the 80s). The midnight album on Saturday nights is fun too. I also enjoy it when they play records that made the Hot 100 but fell short of the national Top 40. Many of those records received air play here on stations like KJR and KING AM's. Wake up KMCQ! You are ruining a great station!

Sounds like a train wreck! Is KMCQ oldies, classic rock or classic hits? ???

Since you're obviously not from the Seattle area (according to your handle) you don't know the history of this station.

Despite what the board denizens think, this station is running a placeholder format until they can get it sold...and the story of how THAT cam about is lengthy, and it's not going to be repeated here. Google "KMCQ move in" to get TROTS.

"ALL songs of the 60s and 70s" (although they play songs from the 50s and 80s).

So yeah, they play literally everything, even some of the worst possible gimmick songs like Junk Food Junkie.

For those who are complaining about hearing too many songs from particular artists that they don't care for...don't you think that comes with the territory?

It seems to me that a deep playlist is going to mean that each person will hear more duds, as welling as hearing the songs that have that personal "wow factor" for them. After all, no two listeners are going to like exactly the same set of library songs.

The problem is that KMCQ's play list isn't all that deep anymore. Yes, they span a lot of years but they seem to be playing the same records over and over again. I hear Moondance by Van Morrison so often on KMCQ that it is making me dislike that record. The great thing about KMCQ used to be that you could listen for a couple of days in a row and hear very few repeated records. Nor would you hear too much of any one artist like you do on KJR FM with acts like Billy Joel and Steve Miller. On Sunday afternoon on KMCQ I heard an awful set of tunes... Grateful Dead, Little Feat and then Abracadabra by Steve Miller! Good grief! I immediately changed the station and did not listen for the rest of the night. Someone at 104.5 is blowing it!

Toonces2u you seem to have a severe love hate relationship with this station.
It seems you are the first to complain about it yet also tout its merits.

Texas Tom has it right, if you want a deep playlist then you need the good with the bad. Not all of us love Bee Gees but will to listen for the next song and that hidden gem.
I said it earlier we listen at work so I hear this station a lot and what you are saying does not sound like what I hear.

I also hear this all day "ALL SONGS OF THE 60's AND 70's. Listen long enough you will hear an 80's.
Just saying ;D
