The ever-evolving KMCQ

Toonces2u you seem to have a severe love hate relationship with this station.
It seems you are the first to complain about it yet also tout its merits.

Texas Tom has it right, if you want a deep playlist then you need the good with the bad. Not all of us love Bee Gees but will to listen for the next song and that hidden gem.
I said it earlier we listen at work so I hear this station a lot and what you are saying does not sound like what I hear.

I also hear this all day "ALL SONGS OF THE 60's AND 70's. Listen long enough you will hear an 80's.
Just saying ;D

Perhaps you are right. Maybe I am listening too much. I guess the thing to do is stop listening to KMCQ and revisit my vast CD collection again or subscribe to satellite radio. I've already begun streaming other stations on my computer at work.

They do have obvious sets. If you hear one 50s song you'll probably get something of a similar tune. Then if you hear Bob Dylan it'll follow up with Joplin, and so on.

But having conversed with whomever runs their Twitter account they clearly have actual requested songs playing as well as "song of the day".

KMCQ's set is far deeper than it used to be, and it's deeper than KJR, who can't even be bothered to play anything that isn't Beatles, Stones, America, Eagles or Fleetwood Mac.

10,000 Oldies has a website now. Still in developmental stage clearly.

10,000 Oldies and Casey Kasem are the two saving graces lately on KMCQ. I swear, their playlist these past few weeks have Jay Kelly's finger prints all over it. Heavy on repeated, tired oldies by acts like The Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, Eagles, Billy Joel etc. Heavy on Motown, Aretha Franklin, Beatles, James Brown, Rolling Stones. The station is beginning to sound a lot like the two stations Kelly ruined previously in Seattle.

Well, if you REALLY wanna musically sound like KJR-FM or KBSG, it isn't exactly rocket science for anyone: Look for the biggest, most overplayed hits from the core artists of the '60s-'80s Classic Hits genre (Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Elton John, The Eagles, Phil Collins/Genesis, Doobies, et al.)

You're right. The sad thing is what made KMCQ so great is that they did not sound like those two crummy stations. They avoided that boring formula for their play list. Not true anymore. This has all happened in recent weeks. I'd sure like to know what happened.

To use a real estate analogy.

KMCQ was bought by investors to flip. It was a true teardown/rebuild. The renovation took longer than expected, with a bunch of permitting delays and such, and by the time it was listed the market had tanked. The original investors folded, it was repo'd by the bank, and has now been listed for a couple years as a short sale. The bank put a couple of interesting old lamps in there on automatic timers to make it look lived in. Now they might be trying to stage the property- fake furniture but close enough to the real thing that a buyer could see his/her own furniture in there instead. If they knew back then that it would take this long, they might have tried harder to find a good renter.

You're exactly right.

Now they might be trying to stage the property- fake furniture but close enough to the real thing that a buyer could see his/her own furniture in there instead. Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Ohana Media is now "operating" KMCQ for the ownership right now. Tom Oakes, VP of Programming from Anchorage is feeding the music these days. Ohana owns stations in Anchorage & Coos Bay, but is run by Trila Bumstead from Seattle.

Perhaps you meant Astoria? I don't think Ohana owns any stations in Coos Bay, but they do own KCRX 102.3 and KVAS 103.9 in the Astoria market, OR.

Do you perceive that as:
1) a favor (no guarantee or expectation of ROI)
2) an LMA
3) doing something good in hopes it will bring good Karma when a new suitor is chosen
[Given number of bigger players who would pay for it, I would think Ohana would be outbid if it goes to market, so #3 doesn't seem likely to me]

There was no shortage of people lining up all along with LMA offers ... including KVI that wanted to pair the two stations when the oldies format was launched originally. Maybe several consecutive months of propping the thing up is taking its toll on the owners perception of market value.

Hmmmm. Well, Mr. Oakes is doing a very crappy job. I knew something was up when I started hearing Stairway To Heaven. Hey bud, ever hear the phrase "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? What was wrong with the people who had been programming the station??? Though 104.5 may indeed be merely a place holder and up for sale, the major reason they grabbed as many listeners as they have was the deep playlist of oldies that set the station apart from the tired and boring KJR FM and the formerly equally as dull, KBSG. This news is a total bummer. I suppose next we will hear they are dropping AT 40 the 70s and the 10,000 Oldies show.

Mr. Oakes hasn't done anything with the station. The folks who have been running it are still running it...music and all.

Toonces2u - the music is what it is. Nothing has been done with it...the folks who have been running the station continue to program it. I'm sorry if you don't believe me however that is the truth. All of which is a reminder why I rarely ever post let alone ever read any message boards.
