The Expanded AM Band

ICF-P26 - link just to indicate when Sony made another pocket radio - their ICF-S10MK2 was sold through 2011 even though it never tuned in the expanded AM band.
The ICF-P26 has apparently been discontinued. But X-Band listeners rejoice! There is a replacement, the ICF-P27.

When baby monitors and cordless phones were on 49/46 megahertz I used to listen there quite a bit.. It was amazing what you could find out about your neighbors lol.. especially the one neighbor in Dallas living in the apartment complex that was running a massage parlor!

In the early 70's, my older brother had a multiband radio and we would listen to local mobile phone conversations.

Some of that stuff we heard was better than any soap opera!

And getting back to the X band.

When AM radio only went up to 1500, I remember pushing the tuner just past there and hearing some kind of tones and beeps at night that sounded like what you'd hear on shortwave.

I miss the days not too long ago when 1700 KVNS used to play oldies and I would often listen at night from Tampa because it was like listening to AM radio when I was growing up.

In this short video, the signal starts out weak and then suddenly booms in.

Have you watched Dateline lately? They are able to access every move a person makes by "pings" off cell towers, and in many cases, exact geographic coordinates. They are tracking everybody, not just criminals. It's only revealed when legally necessary, but who knows who might hack access to it or use it illegally?

Sorry for taking us back off topic for a bit... But in response to the comment above, there's also this:
But when I first discovered this hidden location list, I felt it was a bit much, to say the least. The Significant Locations list shows a minute-by-minute route history of my exact whereabouts in every location I’ve been in over the past few years.
At the end of the day, we are responsible for letting technology creep further and further into our lives, because we keep valuing its personalized benefits over the less useful but more private alternate universe.
Do some digging on your own to find out what settings are turned on and which you’ve turned off. Find out what settings you can control and what exactly they’re doing. You control your own tech destiny. This is just one quick PSA about an area of your iPhone you probably hadn’t explored too much.

I just listened to KCJJ Iowa City online, and it has an interesting mix of music. Musically, Wikipedia classifies KCJJ as Hot AC, but this does not seem to be a typical Hot AC station. Below is a list of songs that the station played when I listened.

"Something Better" - Audien ft. Lady A (2015)
"We Belong" - Pat Benatar (1984)
"Never Gonna Leave This Bed" - Maroon 5 (2011)
"Love It When You Hate Me" - Avril Lavigne ft. blackbear (2022)
"Good 4 U" - Olivia Rodrigo (2021)
"Word Up" - Cameo (1986)
"Perfect" - One Direction (2015)

The online stream is in stereo, but the quality is lower than that of other music station streams that I have listened to.

In addition to the music, KCJJ provides local and national news, as well as local sports and weather. It also provides play-by-play coverage of local high school basketball games.

I am amazed that a full-service radio station with an interesting mix of popular music remains in operation on the AM expanded band.
KCJJ is great, I listen to/watch them on Youtube and Mytuner, plus they do a Monday, Wednesday and Friday Iowa Hawkeyes podcast that’s good too. The yearly Police Reports Hall of Fame videos on their Youtube channel are hilarious, especially when the puppet parade happens...
