Big change for Dickey, as 1340, even with a weak signal, will be able to not only have Fox Sports all to itself.
Now, it will allow the company to pick up more of the niche sports products that are not on Atlanta radio, as the Atlanta Dream (WNBA team) are already on 1340, and maybe some Atlanta Silverbacks soccer can be picked up, and more college football games (perhaps Clemson, Alabama, South Carolina, teams popular in the metro area).
Now, with 680 having ESPN, and 790 being stuck with Sporting News Radio, Dickey will have most of the national sports radio rights in Atlanta with them. Unless 790 can change into more of a local sports talk station, on the weekend, we might see several hours become brokered on that station.

I don't know if big is how I'd describe it. WALR-AM is not going to show up in the ratings. During the day, the signal makes it to the Perimeter. At night, it's basically an inner-city signal.
Wouldn't it make sense to convert 1230 back to sports also? WCNN doesn't cover Marietta at night.

Yes, it would make sense to convert 1230 to sports, too. Wasn't it one of the stations that broadcast Kennesaw State University sports this past season? An FM simulcast wouldn't hurt, either, although it's probably not going to happen anytime soon.

1230 would fill in one of WCNN's nulls in their horrid directional night pattern. Maybe they could simulcast, at least after sundown. Now they just need a NE partner. WGGA 1240 out of Gainesville would work, and they already do sports. But that still leaves a "donut hole" over Gwinnett. I doubt that 610 WPLO is for sale, and they're only 225W night.

The big deal of this story is 680 taking the Fox Sports Radio programming away from 790. Fox is the clear #2 to ESPN Radio nationally and Sporting News barely is a blip.
This weakens the 790 product offerings.
It looks like a shrewd move by the Dickey's to try and continue the distancing they have done from 790.

Yeah, and if they play their cards right, they could get the rights to some of the small college programs in the Atlanta area, such as Emory and Oglethorpe for men's basketball. Maybe even an Atlanta area high school football game of the week could work on either 1230 or 1340. In fact, a simulcast of the new "Fan 2" would likely work better than a 680/1230 simulcast.

They're trying to use 1340 as a flanker, but I don't think it will create more separation between WCNN and WQXI than already exists. The Zone has locally focused shows and is well branded; "The Fan 2" doesn't have the signal.
