The Fan Already Getting Away From Sports?

So, after six months of telling us that they are the only true "All Sports" station around, they are now clearly talking less sports than even the Ticket. B&S are all about movies and music and cougars now. Scott and Hill did an entire show on cartoon characters yesterday and man-crushes today. Newy and Sean were talking about sending girls to an all girls school today. Have six months of bad ratings caused them to basically change formats? What happened to all of that gusto about finally giving DFW sports fans a station where they can hear nothing but sports and no guy-talk?

It's a CBS owned and operated station...That should about sum it up.

Exactly... "C"omplete "B"lunt "S"tupidity... "C"orporate "B"ull "S"%@#

They have to do something considering their numbers have dropped for 3 straight months.

Tom Bigby had amazing success at WIP in Philadelphia doing this.

And they've only really been on the air 3 months. This latest PPM was the March numbers- didn't They switch to the fan in December? So their high point was when they switched, and they've been sucking ever since. (although this last book is better than february's)

In their demo they're TWENTY SEVENTH (and let that sink in for a moment, they are 27th with their target audience, m25-54. can anybody hear name 26 other stations that would appeal to men more than a sports station? I might be able to get 10-12 deep (ESPN and KTCK, 3-4 talk stations, 3-4 rock stations, couple of Spanish language or urban stations, etc) before I'd started listing stations that cater to women. Think about that. Odds are more men prefer (as a possible example, i'd have to check the numbers to be sure) the relaxing soft rock of 103.7 to the sports on 105.3. )

I got to believe that in this day of PPM, you can't sit around for a couple of books (3-4) like you used to. Much more pressure to perform NOW!!!!! And if you're talking "all sports" and ending up 27th, hey, run in some strippers, get some lady to swallow a keilbasa, do what you gotta do to get out of the toilet...

And my theory from listening to the Tciket is this- I think they do sports enough that they seem like a sports station, but mix in the non-sports stuff for those listeners that would rather be entertained than whipped by one more segment on the Cowboys/Rangers/Mavs, etc. Their success has been, IMHO, from finding a good balance of the two. Enough sports to keep the sports nerds happy, enough entertaining stuff (sports or non sports) to keep their numbers up.

This is true. Also, when 105.3 eventually does talk sports, if you notice that, overall, there is little to no talk about the NHL Stars team, that's another Bigby byproduct. The Flyers were a forbidden topic on WIP for some time.

Banning the Flyers on WIP seems odd...it's not unlike that team doesn't draw pretty good TV numbers in that market. Hockey isn't foreign in Pennsylvania. The Pens-Flyers game outdrew "American Idol" in Pittsburgh this week.

There's no Stars talk on KESN either. Some of that is still a product that the sport is new here and it takes time (a generation or more) to build a fan base. Some of that, I imagine, is a product of the talent on KRLD-FM and KESN being oblivious to it. It's probably a blessing we don't get analysis from Michael Irvin, Greg Hill, Galloway, or any of the rest.

It will be interesting to see how the new Stars/KTCK deal unfolds this fall. The Stars marketing and media relations folks seem to have a sense of humor (i.e. last season's press passes have KTCK drops -- "do you like this gig?" -- mixed in the legal language). KTCK folks obviously beat to their own drummer. Certainly, the first KTCK/Stars contest that started this week (Stars Fantasy Scramble: http://www.theticket.com/Contests/STARSFANTASYSCRAMBLE/tabid/572/Default.aspx) has to be one of the best local radio contest give-aways around these parts. It will be interesting to see what else they come up with over time.

That has to be hard on Gavin Spittle, since he thinks the Stars can't win without him.
