The fan coming to Tampa

I have a few ideas. :p They would never come true but how about an awesome oldies station on am. I wished I had the money because it would be the 70s all over again with am radio. People think I'm crazy but whatever. I love the older music and I have listened to very many awesome airchecks of the awesome stations back in the day. I'd also like to see a christian rap and rock station in Tampa. I believe that would work very well. Sorry for the OT post. :)

Spoken word formats, even with big airstaffs, are less expensive to run than music formats because of the ridiculously high music royalties. You will never hear music formats on major-market AMs again. Ever.

CBS usually does live and local 100% on their FM sports talkers, but I could see ESPN being a fit in this case, with Mike and Mike, and then Colin Cowherd, who has a history in the market.

Is Al Keck still doing a brokered show on Tan Talk?

Andd while you may think DAE is dropping the ball with Jim Rome, it's one of his best markets and he gets ratings. He has a few places like Tampa, Cleveland and Houston where he does well, in addition of course to SoCal.

The original plan was to move WFLA to 100.7 and WDAE to 97.9. The problem is they have no Plan "B" for the 620 and 970 frequencies which are very profitable... for now...

Kinda similar to CBS' situation in New York with three big AM stations, neither of them on FM at this time. (Interestingly, "WFLA" already is on 100.7 FM in Tallahassee...)

@BillAlm: I wouldn't blame CC for not being local from noon-3 PM - they're probably mandated to run Rome from CC Corporate...

With WHPT abandoning music, why would CC drop 98 Rock now?

Couldn't agree more with most of you. 1010 on FM is still 1010. Unless they can wrestle away the Rays, Bucs or Lightning from DAE they'll still never compete even with a bigger stick.

Also, moving 620 to an FM stick would be silly. Why do you need an FM stick when your AM signal reaches into south Georgia and almost all the way to Orlando? How much are you really gonna add by going FM?

620 reaches to GA? Where?

You guys are placing way too much thought into "signal" and "coverage". While it does matter (and in this case 1010's sucks compared to 620 and 1040), the intent and trend here is to move programming from the AM to the FM side because there are fewer and fewer people listening to the AM side of the dial. So while the argument can be made that programming on a station like AM 620 does not have to make the move to FM simply to overcome signal issues; it does increase the chances of more listeners and more often. Example... Let's say I'm a 28 year old male that likes rock, country, and "hot talk" and I'm listening to 102.5. They go to commercials... I don't click over to the AM but instead punch up my other FM presets which could include 98.7 The Fan, 98Rock, WQYK, and any other FM stations that cater to MY tastes. The longer you wait to make the move to FM the more work you'll have to do to re-image when the others do it before you.

WFLA is hanging in on 970 but as we've said many times on this board, it's only a matter of time. As for WDAE, they're well established on 620 and the signal is solid anywhere in Tampa Bay. And let's remember, it's about Tampa Bay... not if you reach Ocala, Orlando, or Ft. Myers. However, as direct demographic competitors begin appear on the FM side, their ratings could suffer. Just my opinion of course.

PS.... and one more thing, Clear Channel isn't gonna kill off good revenue to replace it with less. Unless you have a dog on the FM dial (which CBS does with 98.7), it's not worth making the move. I think you're gonna see WFLA pop up on all these FM translators soon. Go ahead and run a search for "Tampa" on Radio-Locator. Lots of recent permits issued in just the last month for modifications for 94.5, 95.3, 105.9, 103.9, and even a 104.3 in Riverview. Something is going to happen.
