"The Fan" fumbled big this weekend...

I found it quite odd that the newest "sports" station in town had no live coverage of the NFL draft!?

The Tickets signal is hit or miss in the car and ESPN is almost as bad at times (especially when I want to listen to it).

I tuned to 105.3 excited to get use of their 100,000 watt coverage of the draft, but got the auto lease hour instead.

Why would they keep the paid programming going this weekend when it's a big event?

Add this to the (long) list of reasons why The Fan will never compete with KTCK or KESN.

Suppose I'm just preaching to the choir...

It is really quite simple... Brian Purdy, David Henry, Gavin Spittle and this Bigby guy - like most of CBS Radio - have no friggin clue how to program a station. Sad really--- Yet they get a paycheck!?!

No clue? Well OK that's probably half right. The larger problem is the corporate people are unwilling to invest time and money into the so-called product. Instead they all operate as cheaply as possible, and hope it makes their wallets fatter.

I'm not sure which is worse: the fact that this is where radio is, or that it's gotten to the point of become another cliché. :-\

I don't know when you tuned in, but they had Sham and Salisbury doing live coverage on Saturday. When I flipped by on Sunday, they were running a NASCAR show. I call this radio FAIL since the Cowboys had most of their picks in the late rounds Sunday afternoon.

Wow, you guys don't pay attention at all.

Most of the day on Saturday they had the first two rounds live. Hell they even had a draft party at the Arlington Convention center.

Sunday morning they had the third round, and through out the rest of the day they did the cowboys draft picks.

To say "The Fan" fumbled is a LIE.

Although I still believe NASCAR coverage doesn't work well on radio, let's face it, Sunday's race was one of the most dramatic, and personally I have never witnessed anything like it. So while coverage of the race itself on radio doesn't have visual images, talking about it post race was likely quite interesting for the NASCAR fans in this market.

Those of you who missed the race on TV or in person, really missed a good race.

I agree. I almost missed work just to watch the end of it. Amazing finish, sorry for the 8 fans who were injured.

Saturday the Fan had coverage from 1pm to 8 or 9pm. Brad Sham, Larry Brown, Mick, Salisbury, Ben, Skin were all on. Look not everybody does it like the ticket....matter of fact I don't know another radio station that does that much coverage, but to say The Fan had no live weekend coverage just isn't true.

I heard a couple of minutes of the Fan's draft coverage Saturday. I listened until I heard Greg Hill open his annoying mouth. So, in total I listened about two minutes.

A fumble is when you get the ball in your hands and drop it. Which is exactly what the Fan did. Ben and Skin sucked, there was little credibility to anyone on air, and when the local team actually started picking players- the team who the Fan will be broadcasting in the fall- the Fan barely noticed.

Do you really consider a 30-second ticker sports flash between Autoflex and Rodney Anderson infomercials to be comprehensive and insightful coverage?

Here is an HSO- don't tell me your station cares about the true sports fan when you'd rather sell me a house or lease me a car than tell me about 12 freakin' draft picks on my favorite team.

Did The Fan give you the draft picks? Yes.

Did The Fan have prior obligations before the Cowboys signed on? Yes.

Fan didn't fumble, just because you didn't like the coverage that they were limited to.

Prior obligations? Are you freakin' serious?

They market themselves as the best local sports station in the market. They market themselves as the flagship of the Dallas Cowboys. Their obligation is to the listener first. If the audience doesn't get what they want, the audience tunes out. If they audience tunes out, no one hears the commercials, If no one hears the commercials, then there is no reason to buy air time.

I don't listen to sports talk to just get the names of the draft picks. I listen for analysis. I need someone to tell me who the obscure 6th and 7th round picks are- not just their names, but what they might be able to contribute. ESPN did that. Norm and the boys did that. The Fan didn't.

News stations cover news stories even if it means bumping infomercials. So should serious sports stations.

Defend them all you want, but for me- the average listener in the key demo who stations like the Fan depend on to sell air time- their coverage was a joke. Not a very funny joke at that.

But why argue with each other?

Let's see how the ratings turn out and we will see who is right.

Yeah I'm freakin' serious. NASCAR was with the Fan before the Cowboys were.

Saturday they did a great job at giving all they could, considering that the Boys' didn't have a pick in the first 2 rounds.

Sunday they couldn't do anything about the limited coverage with the draft.

I understand the ratings problem, but again they had a previous obligation on sunday.

I'll agree with the other poster. They've known since November/december that the draft was this weekend and that they were going to be a sports station. They've had a pretty good idea since January (when KTCK took their option out of the cowboys contract and signed the Stars) that they might be the Cowboys flagship. And yet they did nothing to get out of their "previouis obligations"????!!???

Unaccetable in my book, especially once the Cowboys traded out of the first day and had 12 picks on Sunday. It's obvious that they let the sales department make the call here, instead of letting programming call the shots. Or, at the very least, the PD didn't think it was important to cover Day 2,and programming made that call.

If that is the case, further evidence that Spittle's an idiot, and indicative of the problems The Fan is going to face going up against KTCK and ESPN. TNo matter which way they go, there's another station already doing it, and most likely doing it better than 105.3.

if you like guy talk, bits and schtick, Fake Jerry blows Ben and Skin's lame bits out of the water. If you like serious sports, ESPN has bigger names, thicker rolodexes, etc, and will almost alwasy get the big name national guests, etc.

The Fan is going to have to go above an dbeyond what either 1310 or 103.3 are doing to beat them. And yes, that means giving up the easy money of the brokered hours and actually covering both days of the draft.

Unaccetable in my book,

Oh puh-leeze, get real... Right now the Cowgirlboys are not even worth following. Now if they won the Superbowl back in February, you might be on to something.

Maybe you can say that they covered it in a way not to your satisfaction, but you cannot say they did not cover it. Saturday coverage started before the first pick, Brokered time did not effect the broadcast, and the race did interfere with the Cowboys picks, but the Fan Draft coverage sandwiched the race. ;D

"Did not cover the draft"---- Untrue ;)

"Covered the Draft Poorly" ---- Plausible, and a good topic for debate. ???

Should the Fan have copycatted coverage of the Draft from the Ticket or ESPN, or should they have covered it in a different manner, or the manner in which they did? ::)

Just remember not to pass opinions for facts, present the facts, followed by your opinion, then let's talk.

Oh and don't Ben and Skin do that "Big Beef Hotline thing???? Let's call it and voice Draft Beefs there! See if they would air any of the opinions on this post. I'm betting they would be instructed not to. Even if you were to vaguely reference another station w/o a name, and not use profanity. Let's find out! I'm calling it!

..... ummmmm Anyone know that number? ??? ??? ???
