The Fan gains on the Ticket?

I hear through the grapevine that The Fan has moved into 2nd place passing ESPN in the sports talk war...

Got a call, haven't seen the numbers...anyone know more?

Thats like the Pinto passing a Vega, and now its in second place behind a Ferrari

KESN-FM 1.2 328,200 Sports ESPN
KRLD-FM 1.2 311,400 All Sports CBS Radio

Yeah... I bet Mike and The Cobra are losing sleep ;D

These are the latest ratings for KRLD-FM.

January 2010 1.7 581,100
February 2010 1.2 311,400

How can they be in 2nd place with numbers like that?

No one buys advertising based on 6+ numbers. The sports stations go after men 25-54 and in that demo, KRLD-FM is now #2:

As for catching KTCK, Horn's column has last February's numbers. Year over year, KTCK went from 6.8 last February to a 8.9 this year (+2.1), KRLD-FM from 1.3 to 2.2 (+0.9), and KESN from 3.4 to 1.9 (-1.5). So, KRLD-FM isn't catching up since it is growing at a slower pace than KTCK did. KESN obviously has problems...they dropped local live programming after 6PM several weeks ago.

I'm too tired to transcribe numbers, but I finally got ahold of some figures- and it's not that The Fan is doing so well as ESPN is doing horribly.

The Fan has been in the 20's, and jumped up to around 17-18. ESPN has been in the low teens and nosedived to the low to mid 20's.
My question is fluke or trend? It's entirely possible that ESPn bounces back to where they were, and KRLD-FM slides back down and we return to status quo...

Does this mean that Ben and Skin are doing even worse in the ratings than Irvin did?

Yes they are doing worse than Irvin, according to Barry Horn.
Yeah, because Barry is totally impartial when it comes to Mike... ::)

Seriously, yes they're doing worse, but this trend is also their first moth on the air. So those few people who did like Mike, may have tuned out to a couple of young whipper-snappers taking his place....The question will be in a few months if they get any of those people back or if they get disgruntled Fan or Ticket listeners to check them out...

Problem is when they do listen they find out they suck.... Another impressive hire by the radio genius Pete Dits.

Never had a big following on the Ticket, failed because they couldn't get ratings at the Fan................................and they're going to magically attract all these listeners that they've never had now with their third go-around at the market's new hind teet sports talker?

I don't follow that logic. It was just a quick, easy, and I'm sure "cheap" hire to fill a sudden void in the line-up. When they fail here too, it won't be a big surprise but it gives the station time to come up with a better game plan. And, if they are the same ol' Ben and Skin (stupid topics that go nowhere, punch lines that don't materialize, the dry heave inducing KB the Cowboy Homer, etc.) they will do no better and much likely worse than they have anywhere else.

I couldn't swear to it, but I think they did better at the Fan than anybody since has. I remember reading somewhere (Horn's blog??) that B&S actually were doing better than Salisbury when he was on PM drive. And I can only assume that if Barsky and Gregg were doing that great they wouldn't be changing that show around. I don't think B&S are "all that", but they're not that bad...

Sudden? Mike's rating have sucked for a year. I bet Dits looked and realized his options were to bring in "Guy Sports" soundalikes from Detroit, Austin and Portland like some other stations, or put on someone who at least has SOME name recognition...

So does the Fan really think they've won the ratings war? It's one month people try putting together a couple of good months and then you can start calling yourself a true #2.

Who cares if the Fan beats ESPN or not?

Look- Gary Coleman can brag all day about being taller than Verne Troyer, but neither of them are ever going to dunk like Shaq.

As I hit in the Jagger thread, CBS is overly focused on competing for money, instead of creating the great broadcasts that earn share of spending. They want the #2 Sports station and "a" Spanish Language station so they can be a one stop shop in advertising meetings. "You don't need to buy TICKET (or Univision), we have the #2 sports station and all these other stations too." A smarter station manager would have focused on running the great entertainment talk station they already had, and protected a cash cow. It will take FAN 3 years - cumulative - to match LIVEs 07 revenue number. Purdy should fire some bullets - before he gets hit by one.

Nobody thought B&S would drive up ratings, they though they would drive down costs less than they drove down ratings.

Sounds like the Jay Leno in primetime strategy. :D
